At St. Edith's, Eaton under Heywood, there is the most wonderful apotropaic marking I've seen. The "W" or "VV" symbol, linked to the Virgin Mary, was believed to invoke her protection. Post-Reformation, it remained a powerful apotropaic sign.

Maiking protective black salt with iron filings, ashes, and salt ground in a small mortar and pestle. A small black cast iron cauldron was the source of the iron filings. The resultant product will go through a black funnel and into a decorative glass jar. Black salt is said to ward off evil.
