#OnThisDay in ’60 Bruce McLaren won the #ArgentineGP in a Cooper T51. #AnorakFact: the race was Ettore Chimeri’s only #F1 GP, which he drove in his own ex-Juan Manuel Fangio Maserati 250F (pic). Chimeri was killed 2 weeks later, driving a Ferrari 250TR in Havana.

Brilliant, forcing #ArgentineGP drive from 6th on lap 1 to 2nd at the flag #OnThisDay in ’79 by local hero Carlos Reutemann, driving his first #F1 GP for Lotus, in the 79, suddenly superseded as the ground-effect F1 car nonpareil by the Ligier JS11, in which Jacques Laffite won.

#OnThisDay in ’58 Stirling Moss brilliantly won the #ArgentineGP in Rob Walker’s privately entered Cooper T43. #AnorakFact: it was the first championship #F1 GP win for a privateer team, the first by a chassis built by the Cooper Car Company, & the first for a rear-engined car.

#OnThisDay in ’54 Fangio won his home GP, the first of 4 consecutive #ArgentineGP wins that the maestro would amass. It was the #F1 GP debut of the iconic Maserati 250F (pic), which Fangio drove to victory ahead of the Ferraris of Farina (2nd), González (3rd) & Trintignant (4th).

#OnThisDay in ’55 Juan Manuel Fangio won the #ArgentineGP in a Merc W196 (pic). The race was run in intense heat, & he won in 3hrs 38.6sec. #AnorakFact: he & a fellow Argentine, Roberto Mieres, were the only 2 drivers able to finish without handing their cars to another driver.

“I was stonking it, man, the car was beautiful, & it never missed a beat,” said Andretti #OnThisDay 48 years ago, having just won the ’78 #ArgentineGP from pole in a Lotus 78. It was the first of 6 #F1 GP wins for Mario in his world championship year, the next 5 in a Lotus 79.

#OnThisDay in ’57 took place that year’s #ArgentineGP, won by Juan Manuel Fangio (Maserati 250F, car #2), here seen completing a 2-car drift led by Stirling Moss, also in a Maserati 250F, who took pole & fastest lap but could finish only 8th owing to a faulty throttle linkage.

#OnThisDay in ’60 Bruce McLaren won the #ArgentineGP in a rear-engined Cooper T51. But this pic from the same race is too good not to use instead. It’s Phil Hill’s 8th-placed Ferrari 256F1, a development of the ’58 title-winning D246, one of the very last front-engined #F1 cars.

#OnThisDay in ’79, having already won the season-opening #ArgentineGP from pole, Jacques Laffite staged a repeat performance in Brazil, this time delivering a perfect grand chelem victory - pole, fastest lap, leading from start to finish. Oh & wasn’t his Ligier JS11 beautiful?

Oscar Cabalén, born in Argentina #OnThisDay in ’28, ran in the #TurismoCarretera series (pic) & tackled the perilous #CarreraPanamericana & the famous #MilleMiglia. #AnorakFact: he was a reserve for the ’60 #F1 #ArgentineGP, posted a good practice lap, but didn’t start the race.

#OnThisDay in ’71 was held the first #ArgentineGP since ’60. A non-championship #F1 race, it was won by Chris Amon in a Matra. Notable also was the appearance of local hero Carlos ‘Lole’ Reutemann in an Ecurie Bonnier McLaren M7C (pic), his sole McLaren outing. He finished 3rd.
