Jean-Pierre Wimille was born #OnThisDay in 1908. A French Resistance hero in WW2, he would have been a rival to Alberto Ascari & Juan Manuel Fangio in the β50s had he not been killed in practice for the β49 #ArgentineGP. Pic: en route to β37 #PauGP victory in a Bugatti T59S.
#OnThisDay in β60 Bruce McLaren won the #ArgentineGP in a Cooper T51. #AnorakFact: the race was Ettore Chimeriβs only #F1 GP, which he drove in his own ex-Juan Manuel Fangio Maserati 250F (pic). Chimeri was killed 2 weeks later, driving a Ferrari 250TR in Havana.
Happy Tuesday β it's time for another YouTube video! This week, I'm centering on the ultra-hot 1955 Argentine Grand Prix, where some cars were shared between three different drivers!

Brilliant, forcing #ArgentineGP drive from 6th on lap 1 to 2nd at the flag #OnThisDay in β79 by local hero Carlos Reutemann, driving his first #F1 GP for Lotus, in the 79, suddenly superseded as the ground-effect F1 car nonpareil by the Ligier JS11, in which Jacques Laffite won.
#OnThisDay in β58 Stirling Moss brilliantly won the #ArgentineGP in Rob Walkerβs privately entered Cooper T43. #AnorakFact: it was the first championship #F1 GP win for a privateer team, the first by a chassis built by the Cooper Car Company, & the first for a rear-engined car.
#OnThisDay in β54 Fangio won his home GP, the first of 4 consecutive #ArgentineGP wins that the maestro would amass. It was the #F1 GP debut of the iconic Maserati 250F (pic), which Fangio drove to victory ahead of the Ferraris of Farina (2nd), GonzΓ‘lez (3rd) & Trintignant (4th).
#OnThisDay in β55 Juan Manuel Fangio won the #ArgentineGP in a Merc W196 (pic). The race was run in intense heat, & he won in 3hrs 38.6sec. #AnorakFact: he & a fellow Argentine, Roberto Mieres, were the only 2 drivers able to finish without handing their cars to another driver.
βI was stonking it, man, the car was beautiful, & it never missed a beat,β said Andretti #OnThisDay 48 years ago, having just won the β78 #ArgentineGP from pole in a Lotus 78. It was the first of 6 #F1 GP wins for Mario in his world championship year, the next 5 in a Lotus 79.
#OnThisDay in β57 took place that yearβs #ArgentineGP, won by Juan Manuel Fangio (Maserati 250F, car #2), here seen completing a 2-car drift led by Stirling Moss, also in a Maserati 250F, who took pole & fastest lap but could finish only 8th owing to a faulty throttle linkage.
#OnThisDay in β75 Emerson Fittipaldi (McLaren) & James Hunt (Hesketh) battled mightily for #ArgentineGP victory. In the end Emmo prevailed, but their race was a great one. I wrote a #MotorSport column about it. Click below.

#OnThisDay in β77 Jody Scheckter won the #ArgentineGP, which in the β70s often used to kick off the new #F1 season in January, so I wrote a #MotorSport column in celebration of that glorious & much missed season-opening fixture. Click below to read it.

Roberto Bonomi, born in Buenos Aires #OnThisDay in 1919, started one #F1 GP, the β60 #ArgentineGP, in a Cooper-Maserati, finishing 11th. Pic: front cover of the Argentine sports magazine #ElGrΓ‘fico, which was a beautiful print publication produced between 1919 & 2018.
Remembering Ken Tyrrell, who died #OnThisDay in 2001, aged 77. Hereβs the #MotorSport column I wrote about the afternoon I spent with him at his Surrey home, watching the β98 #ArgentineGP. As #F1 legends go, I reckon Uncle Ken is greatly underrated.

Remembering Adolfo Schwelm-Cruz, born #OnThisDay in 1923. He entered just one GP, his home race in β53, the first ever #ArgentineGP (in which Ferrari finished 1-2), in a Cooper-Bristol, qualifying 13th & retiring after 20 laps, his DNF classified as βwheel lostβ. Careless.
#F1 #OnThisDay, April 13th 1997, a great day for #JaquesVilleneuve, not so for #WilliamsRacing teammate #Heinz-Harald_Frentzen. The Canadian won the #ArgentineGP ahead of #EddieIrvine ( #ScuderiaFerrari ) and #RalfSchumacher ( #Jordan ). youtu.be/fF0QsvNfPn0

#OnThisDay in β97 Jacques Villeneuve (Williams) won the #ArgentineGP; Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) was 2nd, Ralf Schumacher (Jordan) 3rd. But had Schumi Jr not collided with Jordan team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella (pic), ending his race, Fisico might have won: a golden opportunity lost.
#F1 #OnThisDay, April 12th 1998, at the #ArgentineGP, German #MichaelSchumacher finished on top for #ScuderiaFerrari with #McLarenF1 's #MikaHakkinen finishing 2nd. #EddieIrvine took 3rd for #Ferrari.

#F1 #OnThisDay, April 12th 1981, polesitter #NelsonPiquet took his #Brabham to victory at the #ArgentineGP. Birthday Boy #CarlosReutemann finished 2nd for #WilliamsRacing while #AlainProst ( #Renault) was 3rd. youtu.be/UXFOSRLC-GM

#F1 #OnThisDay, April 9th 1995, the podium finishers were the only 3 that stayed in the same lap at the #ArgentineGP with #DamonHill, #JeanAlesi and #MichaelSchumacher.
#JohnnyHerbert was a lap down, the rest more than 2.

#F1 #OnThisDay, April 7th 1996, from pole to victory for #DamonHill as he won the #ArgentineGP ahead of his #WilliamsRacing teammate #JaquesVilleneuve. #JeanAlesi was 3rd for Benetton and #JosVerstappen took a point for Footwork.

#OnThisDay in β60 Bruce McLaren won the #ArgentineGP in a rear-engined Cooper T51. But this pic from the same race is too good not to use instead. Itβs Phil Hillβs 8th-placed Ferrari 256F1, a development of the β58 title-winning D246, one of the very last front-engined #F1 cars.
#OnThisDay in β79, having already won the season-opening #ArgentineGP from pole, Jacques Laffite staged a repeat performance in Brazil, this time delivering a perfect grand chelem victory - pole, fastest lap, leading from start to finish. Oh & wasnβt his Ligier JS11 beautiful?
Oscar CabalΓ©n, born in Argentina #OnThisDay in β28, ran in the #TurismoCarretera series (pic) & tackled the perilous #CarreraPanamericana & the famous #MilleMiglia. #AnorakFact: he was a reserve for the β60 #F1 #ArgentineGP, posted a good practice lap, but didnβt start the race.
#F1 #OnThisDay, January 28th 1973, after 96 laps,
#EmmoFittipaldi won the #ArgentineGP for #Lotus. #FrancoisCevert and #JackieStewart were 2nd and 3rd for #Tyrrell. #JackyIckx in 4th was the only one who stayed in the same lap.

#OnThisDay in β71 was held the first #ArgentineGP since β60. A non-championship #F1 race, it was won by Chris Amon in a Matra. Notable also was the appearance of local hero Carlos βLoleβ Reutemann in an Ecurie Bonnier McLaren M7C (pic), his sole McLaren outing. He finished 3rd.
#F1 #OnThisDay, January 22nd 1956, Luigi Musso and Juan Manuel Fangio DNF'd one car but took the win at the #ArgentineGP for #ScuderiaFerrari in the other car. The Maserati's of Jean Behra and Mike Hawthorn were 2nd and 3rd.

#OnThisDay in β56, in Buenos Aires, Ferrari team-mates Juan Manuel Fangio & Luigi Musso shared #ArgentineGP victory. It was Mussoβs first & only #F1 GP win & one of 24 F1 GP wins for Fangio. I wrote a #MotorSport column about Musso. Click below to read it.
