Next, the skyscrapers of downtown Portland, Oregon, rear up. The lights of cars ferrying people to their jobs are visible. Beyond, the folded mountains of the western Cascades march into the mist covered distance until Mount Hood's cone pierces the sky. And behind and above that distinctive mountain, an orange band along the horizon fades from red-orange to yellow-orange. Above that, the thin clouds glow red and slowly, slowly fade to purple at the very top of the image.

Bright lights break up the bleak, misty and moody morning in providing signs of life in across a mixture of buildings, old and new, short and tall. In the distance, the river is a murky blue-gray of stillness but again the bridge across shows signs of life as dotted lights travel over. The cloudy, foreboding sky takes up half of the shot, with tiny glimpses of pink teasing the upcoming dawn.
