Immature Cedar Waxwings have a very streaky breast, and less defined eye masks. These were in the top of a blue elderberry, enjoying some fruit.

Such a stunning bird with a buff / grey chest and belly, slightly darker back, black chin with dark orange either side and orange forehead leading to a fading buff brown bushy crest. A black line above it's beak stretches into a black eye stripe giving the bird a rather intense and almost malevolent look. the wing markings are more defined than its body with black and white stripes with a tiny detail of red tips to its secondaries. the black tail has a yellow tip and the whole look is finished off with an orange vent. This bird has just tossed a hawthorn berry to get its position right for swallowing

Redwings (Turdus iliacus) are winter visitors to the UK. They come across the North Sea from Scandinavia to take advantage of our milder winters and to strip our berry bearing trees. A familiar sight in Edinburgh's parks and green spaces where they gather in large flocks.

Waxwings (Bombycilla garrulus) are also winter visitors to the UK. They come over the North Sea from Scandinavia to take advantage of our milder winters and to strip our berry bearing trees. A familiar sight in Edinburgh where they sit high in trees trilling to each other and then swoop down onto the berry bearing trees for a frenzied feed.

The Eurasian Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) is a UK resident. A delightful little bird. Almost always seen in pairs (male and female) or small groups. Mainly feed on seeds and tree buds but happy to take berries.

European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is a UK resident. This bird has suffered severe decline in breeding population and is now Red Listed.

Did you know a Jay can still squawk at you with his mouth full? I know, right? A blue-headed corvid called a Woodhouse's Scrub-jay already has one peanut in his piehole but is squawking for more from my deck railing.
