Black-headed herons are large birds with a slender build, long neck, and legs. Their most striking feature is their dark, almost black heads, contrasting with a white throat and a grey body. They have a long, pointed beak and yellow eyes. They typically stalk shallow water, using their long legs to wade through mud and vegetation.
