Hey #BookHist folks - I have a vague memory that someone was doing work on early modern dedications? I've got a colleague who is trying to make sense of an early 19th c dedication* and I was wondering if looking at the work on EM dedications might give him some insights. Any recs? 1/2

Q for my #HistSTM and #BookHist friends - the right hand illustration here of an insect on a flower looks really familiar. I am sure itโ€™s a style used in late 19/early 20thc childrenโ€™s book but I canโ€™t place it- any ideas? ๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ

Double Page from Cod. Sang. 51. On the verso, a highly decorated cross-carpet page. On the recto, it says XPI AUTEM GENERATIO SIC ERAT. The words are written in a highly ornate fashion.

I found myself admiring the Irish Gospels of St. Gall for a very long time today. The photo doesn't do this magnificent piece of art justice. Catch the Words on the Wave exhibition if you can.

I'm really fascinated by the widespread practice in Egyptology and some other fields of these handwritten published manuscripts. I wonder if anyone in #bookhist has done work on the practice?

I'm feeling intellectually lazy, so:
Does anyone know of a thesis or study on the libraries of new training colleges for modernising pre-industrial professions in the 19th century. e.g. Medical/legal/military college libraries?

Pity there doesn't seem to be a way to view it from afar โ˜น๏ธ. I wanna know everything about Winifred Gales now, from the whole pirate thing to how she ended up in North Carolina(?!?)

TIL that the plot of the Beastie Boys' "She's Crafty" is found in 1691 pamphlet "Strange newes from Bartholomew-Fair, or, the wandring-whore discovered" by Peter Aretine, as the Wandering Whore narrator clears out customers of all their valuables.
