A black and white image overlooking the ruined walls and ditches of an iron age village settlement about 45 metres across. A circular stone wall and ditch is featured in the foreground, and continues towards the back on the opposite side. The remains of a circular stone broch tower, the main dwelling, stands in the centre, surrounded by the remaining stone slabs of other dwellings. The late summer sky consists of light, fluffy clouds and open sky.

#Brochs are unique to #Scotland. The impressive Broch of Gurness village on the #Orkney mainland dates back to 500-200BC, the Middle Iron Age. It consists of deep ditches and ramparts, plus a circular broch tower.

#IronAgeWednesday: #Brochs - Stone structures found particularly in NW #Scotland, built throughout the Iron Age. #Archaeologists have long debates about their purpose & use. Were they purely defensive or similar to stately homes, or perhaps a mix of defence & living quarters with symbolic functions?
The Caithness Broch Project x @trimontiumtrust.bsky.social crossover we didn’t know we needed #brochs #scotland #archaeology

Great talk by Luke Barry @rubiconarchaeology.bsky.social for #SAF2025 on the power of social media for reaching new audiences! Kenneth and I from the Caithness Broch Project chatted about building #brochs and community resilience for their fab podcast The Shindig last year youtu.be/_adQApclNOI

A local planning application summary (Highland) showing the successful application to build the first replica Iron Age Broch in over 2000 years near Latheron in Caithness, Scotland.
Couldn't resist sharing this because CBP don't have a Bluesky account yet.
Isn't this just completely AWESOME?!!!
I feel obliged to point out that authentic Iron Age Brochs didn't have car parking, however. 🤣

Some Scottish history here... the Iron Age Brochs in Glenelg.
Amazing to think the remains of these are still standing after so many years whereas modern buildings show cracks and fall in disrepair within a mere 15 years.

Talking of Brochs, unbelievably it's a year ago already since my visit to the Broch of Mousa in Shetland. Such a brilliant day, and a memorable boat trip out to the island, too. #brochs #Shetland
There are three pictures. In the first image, there is a ruined, circular stone building backset by a grassy hill and a loche. The second picture is of a taller tower with visitors on the top, and with another loche and hilltop behind it. The final image is closer, with another stone tower, this time surrounded by trees.

Such a brilliant piece of archaeological detective work, #Caithness and #Sutherland, have much more archaeology to offer than just #brochs!!
I got into #archaeology because of things like #brochs. Now I rarely look at such things. Caught up with one today, though.
A remarkable post about brochs on (the awful) Facebook. Worth reading.
