It just doesn't really feel like summer without cicadas. And it's not every year that we get a chorus that is so gloriously deafening.
Brood XIV, I'm so happy you're here. And i know you're here for a good time, not a long time ❤️

Cicada on a leaf
Brood XIV has been providing the perfect soundtrack for our summer!
And if you've never heard it--it's pretty easy to imagine how the sound of thousands of cicadas would make anyone believe they'd angered god.

The 17 year cicadas here are something... 100 db at least, it's painful to my ears outside. It's like being a micro in a giant gnat swarm and they will just land on you clicking and screeching. #cicada #broodxiv
Photograph of an aggregate fossil. The rock is grey and there are impressions of fossils all throughout. Along the upper edge is a cicada, perched, totally chill.
Guess what? Cicada! 🤣 My friend and I want to share this cool aggregate fossil with y'all for #RockinTuesday.

Periodical cicada perched on the speckled stem of a poison hemlock plant. Leaves and blossoms are in the background and the sky is a sunny, bright blue. These cicadas emerge only once every 17 years. It’s remarkable being here in the middle of their emergence and I’ve grown ridiculously fond of them—saving them from puddles, letting them catch a free ride on me as I garden and hike, and gently helping them along when they dive bomb into my path. They’re awkward, lovable, and quite remarkable.
My #BlueSkyMonday has a cicada in it. I love these big ole clumsy bugs!

There is madness in the world, but today the brood XIV cicadas are finally singing their song right outside my window. The fact that it is something you only hear every 17 years is kind of blowing my mind, and it's making me a little emotional. Nature is amazing. #cicadas #broodXIV #insects #nature
