Cézanne's painting of five men in a natural outdoor setting. The scene consists of a stream, trees, and an earthen and grassy ground. From left to right, the first man is seated against a tree, one hand on the ground, the other on his raised knees. The next is standing with his back to the viewer; the third is in the distance and appears to be descending into the river; the fourth is standing in a twisted position and seems to be stretching; the last is in the river, his hands covering his eyes.

Paul Cézanne's "The Great Pine"
Description:
Subject and Composition: The painting is dominated by a robust pine tree positioned in the center foreground, which serves as a majestic focal point. Smaller trees and lush greenery surround the main trunk, leading the eye to an ochre-colored path or clearing in the foreground. The background is less defined, suggesting depth and concentrating attention on the central form.
Style and Technique: Cézanne used bold, expressive, and varied brushstrokes to create a sense of vitality and movement. The application of paint in short, parallel lines builds volume and texture, particularly in the foliage and trunk, which was a revolutionary technique for its time. He employed a vibrant palette of blues and greens, accented with warm touches of yellow and ochre, to explore the interplay of form, light, and color rather than traditional perspective.
Artistic Significance: The work exemplifies Cézanne's departure from Impressionism towards a more solid, structured depiction of reality, which significantly influenced the development of modern art movements like Cubism. The artist aimed to "make out of Impressionism something solid and durable like the art of museums".

Madame Cézanne (1891)

I visited it when it was open, in the 90s. His studio was seemingly intact. It was possible to walk around, which seems incredible now.
I shudder when I hear the words 'visitor experience' though. I hope they don't renovate the life out of it.

This is in the studio of the artist Paul #Cézanne in #France. See the tall, narrow door on the right? Cézanne painted on very large canvasses, and his stairwell was too #small to move his paintings outside, where he liked to paint. So he had this door constructed. #BlueSkyArtShow #Aix-en-Provence
