The way the perianth parts are arranged in the flower is important to note: In some flowers, the parts are arranged in a spiral around the floral axis. The sepals often intergrade into the petals. The flowers of this cactus, Echinopsis cuzcoensis, are good examples. #Cactaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

No plant does spines better than cacti, and none is spinier than Stenocereus eruca, a decumbent species from Baja California, Mexico. They are spines because they are modified leaves. #Cactaceae #spine #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

A seismometer is shown measuring the ambient resonance of a single-stem saguaro cactus in the Tucson Mountains, near Tucson, Arizona. The seismometer is a white box about 6" across, sitting on a mounting frame that is strapped to the cactus. Such data represent a new non-destructive technique for biomechanical characterization that can be applied in-situ on living cacti. Monitoring of resonance properties over time may also provide valuable information on changing properties and/or cactus weight.
