A stained glass window in oranges and reds of a golden fleur de lise over what looks like a clump of spreading white daffodils or maybe morning glories. The photo is of the “wrong” side of the window, which is behind protective bars and set into a gray stone wall.
It’s still Sunday for a few hours yet here so… #StainedGlassSunday #cemeterysunday

Three headstones march on a diagonal slope from left to right. Behind them many more can be glimpsed. Arching over most of the shot is a large, healthy, and exuberant Japanese cherry tree in full white blossom.

Close-up of the Susanna Orne gravestone (1777) at Old Burial Hill. The "memento mori" carving by John Homer shows a deeply recessed, anatomically detailed skull resting atop two crossed bones. Below the carving, the hand-etched epitaph is partially obscured by age and natural weathering.

Here's the #gravestone of Susanna Orne who died in 1777 from Old Burial Hill in #Marblehead, #Massachusetts.
I'm in love with the #macabre and dramatic #DeathsHead and #MementoMori motifs of #NewEngland #cemeteries.

Close up of engraving -so close all you can see are blacks and grays even though it is a color photo. Upright diamond pattern divided into 9 smaller diamonds, each with a round dot in the middle. The corners between the diamond and its rectangular frame are filled with a swirly leaf pattern.

Close up of a carving on an obelisk. A harp surrounded by shamrocks.
Harp and shamrocks for #cemeterysunday
A saint, presumably Mary, in a white robe and blue cloak and halo, stands on a rock amid billowing clouds, her arms stretched out in welcome.
A copper sundial, long since turned green, sits on a square pillar. The inscription is hard to read, but enough can be made out to know that this is a centopath for George Merkel, who went down with the USS Asheville on March 3, 1942.
I don’t have any hourglass images for #cemeterysunday, so here is a sundial.
A red cross supporting a red and gold crown stands over white daisies on a sort of purple background
Today I learned #StainedGlassSunday is a thing, so I shall combine it with a bonus #cemeterysunday to show another piece of hidden mausoleum glass. Because of the door fretwork I couldn’t get a complete photo.
A stained glass window, primarily in yellow, of a dove superimposed on the sun, leaded rays coming down to shine on white lilies. There’s a banner at the bottom and a frame of dark gold glass with a sort of abstract flower in each corner. The details are soft focus because the photo was shot through dirty frosted glass.
I learned to get close to mausoleums since a photo from another taphophile prompted me to look for hidden stained glass. #Cemeterysunday
Two plain stone crosses on a hill, one low to the ground and one elevated over the illegible details of the person buried beneath it. Behind them in the middle of frame is a bare tree. Dark dramatic clouds full the sky in the background.
A pair of crosses for #cemeterysunday as we head into Lent
Closeup of a tombstone with a 3-D valentine style heart carved on it. If you squint, the weathered writing on it looks like it might read “Our Dau-“
A valentine from #cemeterysunday
Closeup of a torch carved in grey stone, with a handle like a Greek column and a brightly burning flame. It is surrounded by an arch of carved laurel-like leaves.
I don’t have any owls or snowdrops for this #cemeterysunday, but we can call this an Olympic torch.
Colour photo of a small group of old, fenced-in graves at a cemetery. A tree with weathered and moss-covered bark has grown so close to the black iron fence that it has almost begun to absorb the fence. Inside the fence, behind the tree, are three grave-sized stone slabs on the ground, covered in brown leaves. Outside, in the blurry background, newer headstones and wooden crosses are spread out among some sparse trees. They look better kept than the fenced-in ones.

To the far left behind bare trees you can see a building with a steeple. To the far right, a figure on a pillar in the foreground. In between, a lot of ground with narrow roads and many assorted headstones.
A Romanesque church behind the figure of a kneeling angel on a column. A few scattered headstones can be seen in the short distance between the church and the angel.
On the rare occasions when I’m in a graveyard (as opposed to a cemetery) I try to get at least one shot that includes the church. #cemeterysunday
Black-and-white photograph looking over a grassy cemetery. There are gravestones in various shapes, but all with their backs to the camera. Tall and leafy trees form a dark wall in the background.

Slightly out of focus close up of a carving of a robed figure with wings rising up from the right. On the left, a disembodied hand superimposed on clouds points to a simple crown.
This shot is very blurry, but I think people will understand why this week’s #cemeterysunday has to be the hand of God pointing a rising soul to a martyr’s crown.
Close-cropped shot of gravestones on a hill against a cloudy sky. From left to right: half a pillar with an urn on top, a partially hidden cross, a standing draped figure, a broken pillar with a wreath, several smaller stones, and another cross partially hidden by another pillar. There’s a small bird perched on this, staring into the camera.
Have a belated #cemeterysunday
Side view of a 3-dimensional, life-sized angel stepping up to hang a wreath on an empty cross. There is a drapery over the arms of the cross; with her other hand she holds the trailing edge of it in her lap.
There are angels, crosses, and wreaths galore in historic cemeteries, but I only ever see this combination in this pose in the old Catholic churchyards. #StoneworkSunday #cemeterysunday
Close up of the top of a headstone, which is draped in carved ivy. The delicate details of the wings, gown, and arm of the flying soul, and the folds of the clouds from which 3 winged figures reach down, still exist. But all 3 faces have weathered into haunted hairless doll heads, and the 3 dimensional baby faces peeking out from either side of the stone are not helping reduce the creep factor. The death date has long since worn away and I cannot find this stone listed in find a grave, so I can’t say how old it is.
This carving of a soul flying up to be greeted by angels in heaven probably looked really inspirational. Before the weathering. #StoneworkSunday #cemeterysunday
A life sized statue of a woman in a robe is stepping down stone stairs. Her hair is loose and flowing and she holds lilies in her left hand. Beside her is a broken column with green metal ivy twined around it.
My first haunted cemetery photo! The Walking Woman of Lancaster is rumored to roam the cemetery at night, weeping, with her eyes glowing green. #StoneworkSunday #cemeterysunday
A relaxed angel standing on a mortuary pillar. A bundle of lilies is held upside down in one drooping hand; the other holds a long trumpet.

My iconography book suggests this is Gabriel due to the lilies and horn. Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio
Green pine wreaths with red bows completely cover the rows of headstones they’re propped against. In the center of the plot a tall white monument topped with a draped urn has crossed swords carved into one face. There is another wreath at its foot.
Apparently #GothicYule is a thing? Edge Hill Cemetery West Virginia on Wreaths Across America day; specifically the plot for Confederate soldiers dead of their wounds from Antietam. Note the crossed swords on the monument. #cemeterysunday
Multiple rows of pine wreaths with a red bow propped up and completely covering ranks of low stones. There’s a tall pillar with a draped urn to the left of this plot; behind it are serried ranks of undecorated headstones.
#cemeterysunday is a little blurry but I like the impressionistic wash. Saw people laying Wreaths Across America in a couple cemeteries today.

An extra #cemeterysunday because I got some amazing fog shots this morning
