A beautiful little baby and the largest cuckoo wasp I've seen! Still a small thing, compared to other wasps, though!

Extreme close-up macro photograph of the ovipositor of Chrysis angolensis, a cuckoo wasp from the Chrysididae family. The image highlights the vivid textures and colors of the structure: the ovipositor appears as a glowing reddish-orange shaft extending downward, while the surrounding tissue is a dome-like arch, glittering with blue and violet iridescence. The surface is dotted with minute sensory hairs and appears almost crystalline under the light, giving the scene a surreal, otherworldly quality. The background is softly blurred in rich greens and blues, enhancing the alien feel of the composition

Another glimpse into our world: what we see through the lens transforms the familiar. The ovipositor of Chrysis angolensis #Chrysididae becomes a shimmering, alien landscape.

Close-up lateral view of the metallic wasp, Chrysis angolensis, showcasing bright iridescent blue-green hues, transparent wings reflecting subtle reddish tones, and detailed textures on its head and thorax. The specimen is pinned and contrasted clearly against a vivid purple background.

#Chrysididae are a reason to become an entomologist. This Chrysis sp. has been in my collection for years. Distinctive surface pitting and iridescence set them apart. They're called cuckoo wasps for laying eggs in other species' nests. #macrophotography #entomology #invertebrate 🌿

Dorsal view of a pinned male velvet-ant on a grey background. The body is a brilliant metallic blue, with magenta tints on the all three body segments. The legs and antennae are darker, almost black in some places. The wings are extended away from the body and are smokey throughout. Scattered, erect, dark hairs are scattered across the body and legs. The abdomen has some additional pale setae, especially on the 2nd and 3rd segments. The body is punctate; the back end of the thorax is more heavily sculptured with a reticulate pattern. This specimen was collected in Australia and is the species Ephutomorpha corusca.

Re-sharing this image for #BlueMonday . This is NOT a jewel wasp ( #Chrysididae ), but rather a velvet-ant ( #Mutillidae ).

I know, right?

Cuckoo wasp, Chrysididae. I can still remember the first time I saw a cuckoo wasp. At that time I had nothing to do with insects and was completely clueless. “Wow, two-colored flies,” I said.
