I've had a day in the studio today due to travel plans being disrupted by snow. I finished off a commission and then made a few alterations to my last oil painting. This is 'Derryvaugh Mountains' and is inspired by a trip to County Donegal last year.

'Derryveagh Mountains', oil paint on canvas. A small painting inspired by my summer trip to County Donegal in Ireland. I really loved the quiet landscapes in the area and took a lot of reference photos for my art.

A fun part of my drive was just unexpectedly coming across magical places. I loved #CountyDonegal for its wildness, the smell of turf burning in stoves. I heat my house with a wood stove so I was fascinated.

This is Lough Eske in County Donegal, Ireland on August 4, 2013. In Gaelic it was originally called "fish lake". When the kingdom of Tirconaill was ruled by the O'Donnell family, there was an O'Donnell castle at the edge of this lake. The Bluestack Mountains, also called the Croaghgorms, are in the background beyond the lake.

This is a mosaic of 12 photos made on August 4, 2013 and combined later. The place is near Moville, Inishowen, County Donegal, Ireland.

I made the photos standing near GPS coordinates (55.2362111,-6.9276901).
A sailing web page gives the coordinates of Portkill as (55.2401667,-6.9324665). The camera was handheld. Hugin free software was used to combine the photos into a high resolution mosaic. A high resolution version is at: https://www.a-wee-bit-of-ireland.com/eire_2013/2013aug04_Stroove_mosaic_lb.jpg but is likely larger than should be uploaded here. In Hugin I manually selected 2267 control points so that Hugin could combine the photos with a pleasing viewpoint. After I got home, I wished I had time to make a few more photos to be added to the mosaic.

Camera settings, shutter speed was auto and varied with brightness for individual photos

A legend associated with this place says that Columbcille (also called St. Columba) stopped here for one last look at Ireland before exiling himself to Scotland.

A small pencil drawing featuring an abandoned house I discovered when travelling in County Donegal. There were a few buildings like this dotted about the landscape. I'm quite pleased with this one and will be doing an alternative version using colour.

A stunning view of some towering cliffs in County Donegal, Ireland. The cliffs rise dramatically from the beach sand on the Atlantic coast, showcasing their immense height and rugged, layered rock formations. A dark cave entrance can be seen at the bottom left of the wall of rock. The sky is a blue hue with the bright sun just about to disappear behind the cliffs on the left.
