Over 100,000 people died in the campaign, and another 400,000 were injured, and by the end of 1915, Churchill was no longer the political head of the Royal Navy.

The Dardanelles is one of the world's narrowest navigation straits which connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, and it was the site of one of the most controversial campaigns of World War I.

A reminder of a far off war in a Glasgow graveyard. This is a memorial in the city's Sighthill Cemetery for a 26 year old Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve officer who died near Achi Baba in the Dardanelles on the 4th of June 1915.

Saw Tim Baker last night (he of #HeyRosetta fame).
He (& the #Dardanelles) were great. Awesome show but for 2 annoyances:
1) sound guy had the bass drum on super sub mode (hip hop style bass). Ruined some of the subtleties for the band.😞
2) the audience was crazy noisy. Like shut up & listen.🙄😄

Smoke. Fire. Chaos. My great-grandfather was on board. Would he survive? And what would that survival cost?

American journalists George Schreiner & Raymond Swing witnessed the Anglo-French naval attempt to force the #Dardanelles on 18th March 1915.
I'll discuss their take on the campaign in my talk to @gallipoliassoc.bsky.social on 25th March.

"We have a certain number of ships which we can spare for these operations, ships which we could lose without jeopardising our naval superiority. This — coupled with the fact that the enemy are not a brainy folk — makes the #Dardanelles effort possible."
Fred T. Jane, 13th March 1915.
Do I know anyone who's connected with the HMS Irresistible?
My great-grandfather was first lieutenant when it went down on March 18, 1915. I'm doing a tribute video, would love to connect with fellow descendants of its gallant crew. #genealogy #history #worldwarone #dardanelles #hmsirresistible

"Shrapnel was dropping like hailstones over cargo boats, everybody found it advisable to get under cover. One shell, bursting near the Medomsley, blew a piece of burst shell down through the hatches of No. 3 hold."
Capt. George Rutherford, SS Medomsley, 16th December 1912, #Dardanelles
When the #British and #French warships had concentrated around #Dardanelles Strait and had started bombarding outer fortresses in 1915 the Western press tried best to capitalize on it. But they didn't have actual photos. So they randomly transplanted castles of Istanbul on Dardanelles setting. 1/
