I have a million things to do in the next month, but #darkskyweek starts for me in 9 days so I need to get a head start on the buttons. 🔭

You Can See a Million Miles Tonight, by Dots and Lines from the album Dark Skies

Happy #DarkSkyWeek! I'm so grateful to have grown up around a city that values the night sky, keeping the lights few enough and low enough that the deep distance of space is right there for everyone.

Tonight is the final night of #InternationalDarkSkyWeek! 🔭

Why not step outside and experience the beauty of our night sky later this evening?

Keep the lights low... nature will thank you for it.

In A Flash, by Dots and Lines from the album Dark Skies

Hopping into #InverteFest to say how excited I am to live in a place with fireflies!

They're new to me, but I was absolutely enchanted last summer. I even did a little experimental acapella piece inspired by firefly flashing patterns. (Also, happy #DarkSkyWeek!)

Moths 🦋 Together with butterflies, they form the order Lepidoptera, meaning scaly wing. Unlike common belief, they are not all brown and eat your clothes- their life histories are fascinating, complex, and they are very colourful! They enjoy dark skies and varied habitats! #DarkSkyWeek

Light at night affects more than sleep. It disrupts nocturnal animals, bird migrations, and pollinators. Darkness matters — for all of us. #DarkSkyWeek #ProtectTheNight #day4

A guide to how light shielding can help moths, by Butterfly Conservation. No cut-off means light can travel in all directions, attracting nocturnal insects and contributing to sky glow. Semi cut-off means that some light is shielded but some can still spill upwards. Cut-off means that light is prevented from travelling directly up or spilling upwards. Fully cut-off is best, directing light downwards.

Unshielded outdoor fixtures allow light to be emitted in multiple directions, contributing to light pollution 💡🦋

Choosing cut-off or fully cut-off shielding can help to redirect artificial light away from our night skies.

ALAN affects invertebrates (60% are nocturnal[1]):
🦋 inhibits release of sex pheromones in moths [2]
🦋 ALAN alters day length but not temp, leading to ecological mismatches [3,4]
🦋 attracts insects [5,6]
