In the 17th Century #DarkNights at Bart's Hospital were brightened with candles, and they were needed in large amounts! This entry from 1672 notes the hospital buying nearly 2000 candles for the year 🕯️

With the #DarkNights upon us, here is a scene of the Cornmarket in Derby, in the early 1900s. Shop windows lit up will be familiar today, but the traffic has not only changed appearance, it’s actually disappeared as today’s Cornmarket is fully pedestrianised.

So, here's a photo of the Newcastle University Christmas tree lights being officially switched on last night for today's #ArchiveAdventCalendar theme.
This is actually a banging photo of a big truck lifting a crate with a crane but it is nighttime and it is dark and the whole scene is lit by red, yellow, blue and green lights from the vehicles. It looks festive and ethereal, despite the context of when it was taken.
