Avoid sounding snooty or like you are trying too hard. Clean and elegant word usage is the sweet spot. Mostly people will grok via adjacent word context.

Note: Your local thrift stores often have both good dictionaries and thesaurus. These will be massively thick with teenie print. The age of your dictionary doesn't matter so much as they change slowly. Buy one of those light up magnifying glasses.
