Clogher in Full Voice

The Atlantic was absolutely hammering Clogher Beach when I got down there a few weeks ago. A proper winter swell rolling in through the gap between the headlands, each wave stacking up and throwing that incredible translucent green you only […]

When the Atlantic Catches Fire

The cold at Cappagh Beach the morning I made this photo was the sort that makes you question every life choice that led you to a dark car park before dawn. The sunrise wasn’t that great but shortly before we left, the sun cracked […]

Photo of An Fear Marbh (the Dead Man) island silhouetted against a dramatic golden sky, viewed from Clogher Beach on the Dingle Peninsula. Large Atlantic waves roll and break in the foreground, with spray and mist partially obscuring the base of the island. The sea is a deep steel blue, churned and rough. Jagged rock formations are visible at the island's eastern end.

An Fear Marbh Through the Storm

On a calm day you can sit on Clogher Beach and see An Fear Marbh lying peacefully on the horizon, its profile supposedly resembling a body laid out in repose. On a day like this, though, you’re lucky to see it at all. The swell […]

Photo of the entrance to Clogher Beach on the Dingle Peninsula, looking down concrete steps with a metal railing towards heavy surf. Rough grey-green waves break close to shore, with white foam surging up the sand. A red no-swimming sign stands on the left and a red no-entry sign on the right. A blue sign between them urges people to not litter. Sand has blown across the path and steps. Grass-covered dunes frame both sides.

No Swimming. No Kidding.

A storm was blowing on to Clogher Beach recently. Waves so high they’d go over your head. You definitely did not want to drive down there or swim....

Storm Brewing Over Dingle

Dingle Marina sat there looking calm and civilised. Boats were tuckedin, masts upright, everything in order while the sky overhead threatened rain and hid any chance of a sunset from my vantage point. Luckily, it didn’t rain. The sky […]

Long exposure photo of a group of photographers with tripods on a dark sandy beach at dawn, their figures rendered as ghostly blurs by the slow shutter speed. Cameras on tripods remain sharp while the people appear translucent against a dramatic sky of streaked clouds. A streak of light on the left is another photographer with a light on their head walking away. Rocks jut from the shoreline to the right.

Waiting for the Light

Nothing sorts the casual photographers from the committed ones quite like an early morning alarm on a Kerry beach in March. This lot from Blarney Photography Club were out on Cappagh Strand before first light, tripods planted in the wet […]

Sunday’s storm on the Dingle Peninsula was the kind that turns sensible people around at the car park, but photographers are rarely sensible. I was down at Clogher Strand when the rain properly opened up. My friend and I both grabbed […]

Long exposure landscape photograph of Couminole Beach on the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland in December 2025. Dark jagged rocks rise from the sea in the foreground, their rough barnacle-covered surfaces rendered sharp against the silky smooth water created by the extended exposure time. The Atlantic waves have been transformed into an ethereal white mist swirling around the base of the rocks. In the background, the dramatic headlands and mountains of the Dingle Peninsula recede into the grey overcast sky, their green and brown slopes fading into atmospheric haze. The colour palette is muted and moody in tones of grey, blue-green, and brown.

Landscape photograph of An Fear Marbh (The Dead Man) rock formation viewed from the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland in December 2025. The distinctive island lies in the grey Atlantic waters, its silhouette resembling a human figure lying on their back. In the foreground, green and brown grass slopes down towards dark slate cliffs that drop to the sea. A rustic wooden post and wire fence runs along the hillside. To the left, a dark rocky headland frames the view, while smaller sea rocks break the surface of the calm water. The Blasket Islands are visible in the misty distance under an overcast grey sky. The scene is rendered in muted tones of grey, green and brown.
