20 Nov AD284 #Diocletian was proclaimed emperor. Born in Dalmatia, he succeeded Numerian, after defeating Carinus at the Battle of the Margus. His reforms ended the Crisis of the 3rd C. & reshaped the empire.
He abdicated in 305 — the 1st #emperor to do so — retiring to grow cabbages at his palace.
