Clouded Drab (Orthosia incerta).
A Clouded Drab with the dramatics today. I don't usually pot them, but I thought the markings on this one were particularly nice.

Grey Shoulder-knot (Lithophane ornitopus).
A photo of yesterday's Grey Shoulder-knot killing time in a hammock-like leaf, pretending to be dead and waiting for me to leave.

Common Quaker (Orthosia cerasi).
A recent Common Quaker for #MothFaceFriday. This moth played dead so convincingly that I thought it was dead.

Hebrew Character (Orthosia gothica) playing dead. NFY
Because of the dramatics of this morning's first Hebrew Character of the Year, I have the chance to add something new to the #dramaqueenmoth hashtag. #teammoth
#dramaqueenmoth loves playing dead when you want to take it’s photo. A complete thespian.
They are such drama queens! This year, I've enjoyed taking pictures of #moths playing dead. They differ from the more traditional depictions of moths. I was most surprised by the Poplar Hawk-moth because I didn't think he had a flair for the dramatic. #teammoth #dramaqueenmoth #macromonday
The Satellite (Eupsilia transversa). NFY.
For a short while, he believed that I was stupid enough to fall for his antics. Since the leaf is vertical in the first picture, he's clinging on with one leg. 🙄
#teammoth #dramaqueenmoth
Mottled Umber (Erannis defoliaria).
Somewhere in my shed, this Mottled Umber is hiding out. By pretending to be dead, it gave me a false sense of security. I mistakenly believed that I had more time to take photos, but it saw an opening to flee and seized it.
#teammoth #dramaqueenmoth
Udea ferrugalis (Rusty Dot Pearl).
Drama queen #moths were wished on me by a certain someone yesterday evening, and that's precisely what happened. The first to react with melodramatics was a Rusty-dot Pearl, closely followed by a Mottled Umber.

Picture of the underside of a white moth with black patches near it's face and a very tufty "tail"
I think this Long-tailed Bombyx (Trichiocercus sparshalli) might be in the running for an Academy Award with this performance of playing dead*
(* it's not dead, it's just being a #DramaQueenMoth)

Feathered Thorn (Colotois pennaria).
It just dawned on me that I missed last week's #MothFaceFriday, so here's a "deceased" Feathered Thorn. Photographing the recent Feathered Thorns has been enjoyable.

Red-green Carpet (Chloroclysta siterata).
A geometer moth playing dead caught me off guard. If I'd had my camera ready, I would've taken a better picture, but I was totally unprepared. Plus, I figured that if I took too many pictures of it, it would get away again. 'Cos of their flightiness, I dislike these moths.
#teammoth #dramaqueenmoth
Red-line Quaker (Leptologia lota).
For this Red-line Quaker who is still alive but wants you to think otherwise, let's have a moment of silence. 🤫

Feathered Thorn (Colotois pennaria).
Well, I've never seen this happen before. It makes for an interesting shot, though, so I'm glad it did. After I tipped a Feathered Thorn out of a pot onto a leaf, it flippity-flopped, and this is how it ended up, pretending to be dead.

Looks like the disease is spreading rapidly from @rwhooster.bsky.social garden. Blair’s Shoulder-knot the next species to succumb to the plague. #dramaqueenmoth #teammoth
I found this Blair's Shoulder-knot on the side of the trap. As I went to pot him, he dramatically fell to the ground. He then laid on his back in the pot for 30 minutes. I've just checked him, and he's decided he's alive after all 😂 #teammoth #DramaQueenMoth
Barred Sallow (Tiliacea aurago).
In North Yorkshire, I trapped my first Barred Sallow of the year. But I was forced to settle for a shot of it playing dead because it stayed in character throughout the photo shoot. When I had grown tired of its dramatics, I left it "deceased" on a leaf in Yearsley Woods.

Square-spot Rustic (Xestia xanthographa).
For #MothFaceFriday, a Square-spot Rustic attempted to trick me into believing it was dead a few days ago.

Large Wainscot (Rhizedra lutosa).
The Large Wainscot is the most recent of the 18 species of #moths I've photographed this year to display thanatosis.

Brown-spot Pinion (Anchoscelis litura).
Brown-spot Pinion (Anchoscelis litura) pretending to be dead.
When I get a moth that isn't exactly the same colour as the darker brown Brown-spot Pinions I'm accustomed to getting, it always confuses me a little. If I've identified this moth incorrectly, it will be amusing.
#teammoth #mothsmatter #dramaqueenmoth
Black Rustic (Aporophyla nigra).
It's been almost a month since I've seen a moth play dead, so I was pleased when a recently trapped Black Rustic gave me a chance to contribute to the #dramaqueenmoth hashtag again.
#teammoth #mothsmatter #playingdead
#DramaQueenMoth. I like getting shots of moths playing dead
Leopard Moth (Zeuzera pyrina).
A Leopard Moth for #Leptember 2nd. Of all the #moths I've photographed this year, I believe this one to be the most obstinate. It was a poor first impression. The next one I see, hopefully, will be more animated.
#teammoth #mothsmatter #dramaqueenmoth #playingdead
Brown-spot Pinion (Anchoscelis litura).
On top of yesterday's excitement, there was a moth that liked to play up the drama. One must always be different; in this instance, it was a Brown-spot Pinion with thespian ambitions.

Scrobipalpa ocellatella (Beet Moth).
This isn't the first time this year that I've seen a Scrobipalpa ocellatella. I had my first ever three weeks ago, but I never posted any images because I didn't like the pictures. I'm fortunate to see another of these #moths because they're rare in VC61.
#teammoth #mothsmatter #dramaqueenmoth
Rosy Rustic (Hydraecia micacea). NFG.
A Rosy Rustic was the second new garden moth I caught this morning. Straight out of the pot, it played dead, but it was smart enough to hold on to a leaf to keep from falling. When trying to convince someone that you're dead, this is never a good strategy.

Orange Swift (Triodia sylvina).
A few photos from a day ago of an Orange Swift moth.
#teammoth #mothsmatter #DramaQueenMoth #playingdead
Pale Prominent (Pterostoma palpina).
Many attempts have taught me that you cannot wake a moth that's feigning sleep. Being more adept at the waiting game is how you win.
#teammoth #DramaQueenMoth #playingdead
Popped the trap out from 21.00 to 22.30 last night. Got a few bits. I've never seen such a strongly marked Scalloped Oak before. Oak Hook-tip is always nice to get, and the Orange Swift behaved as expected #dramaqueenmoth #teammoth
