Prepping for a mermaid coloured spinning session. Mostly alpaca, some handdyed merino fleece, and really old fibre stash from Bendigo Woollen Mills #fibreprep #drumcarder.
Wood equipment with spiky rollers and a long sheet of fluffy white wool on top, ready for being made into handspun yarn.
First big fluffy batt from my new drum carder from Classic Carders.

I finally have the chance to put my classic carder into action. This is the standard width, high-sided, with the long bed and a packing in brush.
A quality piece of equipment from just down the road.

Purple wool art batt.
Look at this pretty batt that I made on my #drumcarder! Wool is either Targhee or Falkand. Add-ins are locks, silk, wool neps and angelina.

A photo of a drum carder with reds, orange and brown fibre stretched around it. You can see the "teeth" (metallic spikey glinting). The whole thing is photographed at an angle to show off the most fibre.
I'm making up some random coloured batts for a teaching session on art yarn.

Wool and silk progressively blended into a final smooth batt that’s basically one color, but the first one looks like some sort of crazy lichen.
Carding when you are trying to blend is such a “trust the process” situation the first few passes. This is more of the Panama wool with tussah silk. More embroidery thread to come!

Today I'm carding up some rainbow sari batts on black merino! These are so soft and have beautiful pops of colour when you spin them up!
Carder is the Louet wide carder. It's my favorite carder for making up art batts. Head to our website if you'd like one for yourself!

A spiral rolled, wool batt grey in color with streaks of red is held in a woman’s hands.
Just got home from a trip and had to make something. 🐑🧶Threw together this batt that is way out of my norm. Romney, mohair, alpaca, mulberry silk and other odds and ends. It turned out much nicer than I expected.

I’m picking it open with my hands (instead of using my Lock Pop, which I also love) because I want to maximize feeling the wool texture. It can be very soothing to focus on the texture your hands are feeling and I’m craving that today. (2/n)

Next up is 50g of Corriedale! @pacific-coaster.bsky.social picked it up for me from Fibres West 2023(?) and it’s been waiting for its spa time for a while now. I still haven’t spun my carded batts but I really felt like touching more wool this morning. (1/n)

After trying blending sari silk and bombyx silk in my first couple of carding projects, I wanted to do 100% wool for my next one. This is Bond washed by Clemes and Clemes (their Good Clean Fiber). It indeed was v good and v clean, almost no VMs even! (1/n)

Sample spun a lil bit on my WW drop spindle which feels like a perfect match (4/n)

This is how the washed fleece looked before carding. I carded all the fleece, but only used about one third or half of the silk (5-7g). I hope to blend it with some other project in the future. (3/n)

It was my first time carding (or touching!) gulf coast native and it was a dream: so soft, so POUFY! It’s my first time carding anything on my own independently these days, but I’ve done cvm once before in a class. Love the smooth texture of cvm tooooo (2/n)

My first carded up @mellyknits.bsky.social Guts 🍵 blending 15g of bombyx silk was a bit daunting for me so I blended a lil bit and fed the silk directly onto the main drum. The silk streaks turned out quite cute though! (1/n)

🧵 After a buttload of stubbornness, I managed to pull off three batts. I’m really happy with the color and feel 💖 it wasn’t easy, but why should anything be easy on the first try, is the attitude I shall live by, I guess. Good thing I’m stubborn? 🤷 (7/n)
#handspun #drumcarder #fleeceprocessing
🧵 Packing down the fiber on the main drum with a cat brush helped a lot, (afterwards I ordered a burnishing brush) but it didn’t resolve the problem completely. Not pictured, but the romney continued to not get transferred to the main drum. Any tips? (6/n)
#handspun #drumcarder #fleeceprocessing
🧵 Perhaps picking a longwool as my first drum carding project wasn’t such a smart idea. With silk, even. What was I thinking?! It was hard and I got my butt kicked. I constantly got so much fiber stuck on the licker-in! (5/n)
#handspun #drumcarder #fleeceprocessing
🧵 Per the advice, I started feeding much less fiber in. It definitely worked so much better! HOWEVER I painfully learned that I shouldn’t feed fiber too close to the edges like I have in the pic. I got so much fiber stuck in the crevices of the carder 😵💫 (4/n)
#handspun #drumcarder #fleeceprocessing
🧵 This was the very first fiber that went into my new carder. Friends advised later that I should be putting ~ 1/3 of what I have pictured. The less, the better, when it comes to carding. And I remembered, that was a big theme in the workshop I took too (3/n)
