Hoverfly (Epistrophe eligans)
These are mainly eligans larvae in diapause. They will form puparia next spring becoming shorter, fatter and a tear drop shape. They were found under a discarded piece of plastic and relocated to a nice new home

A female Epistrophe eligans hoverfly, photographed on a shrubby honeysuckle. She has a gleaming brassy thorax, and a black abdomen with two orange bands. Her scutellum and legs are also orange, her eyes are red, and her face is pale. In this photo there is motion blur around her wings because she was cold, and was vibrating her thoracic muscles to raise her body temperature enough to be able to fly.
