ETRUSCAN BONE MIRROR-HANDLE, 350-300 BCE. MUSEO NAZIONALE DEL BARGELLO

There are two double-tailed mermen or Tritons on this handle. The side we can't see here shows a bearded merman with his tails in a twist. Apart from the beard he also has outspread wings. The side in this image shows a young, beardless merman holding his tails turned upward, crossing in front of him so his right hand holds his left "foot" and so on. Two arms from above seem to be placing a missing circlet on his head. Both these strange, typically Etruscan monsters have their phalli pushed forward by the twisting of their tails, but there's nothing ithyphallic going on. We register their maleness. This mirror handle would be tightly grasped by a woman using the mirror. She had control over these male monsters. Women and seamen don't mix.

An #Etruscan bone mirror handle from 350-300 BCE gives us this two-tailed #merman holding his feet/fins at his sides. Two hands from above once held a diadem onto his head. As for his #phallus, as this is #PhallusThursday, he's in cold water. There is shrinkage. #AncientBluesky 🏺

Extremely grateful for @veliteaquila.bsky.social allowing their #art to be included in #matuww

We felt the last post didn't do enough justice in showing the knowledge and meticulousness behind the research.

So we'd showcase their work in matuww here:

Highly colorful relief on the front of a rectangular Etruscan funerary urn. It depicts two warriors in full armor battling one another, with one - whose helmet has fallen off (on the ground below his opponent) on his knee. It appears the standing warrior has stabbed the stumbling warrior in the neck, but the stumbling warrior may have stabbed the standing warrior in the groin. Two psychopomps - both apparently the winged female 'demon', Vanth - stand on either side of the scene, each carrying a torch.

An inscription reads 'Arnsa: frauni: murinal', but the meaning is unknown.

From Chiusi, 2nd c. BCE. In the collection of the Museo Archeologico Regionale "A. Salinas", Palermo, Sicily.

#Polychromy is a broad term for a range of painted sculpture, terracottas, architecture and more. The vividness of ancient pigments always surprises people, and this #Etruscan funerary urn really showcases those natural colors. 🏺 1/

The cippus, which seems to have been a border stone, appears to display a text dedicating a legal contract between the Etruscan families of Velthina (from Perugia) and Afuna (from Chiusi), regarding the sharing or use, including water rights, of a property upon which there was a tomb belonging to the noble Velthinas.

The subject of the figural decoration of this hydria (water jar) is Herakles and Iolaos slaying the Hydra.

Painted in black figure, the scene occupies the upper register on the body of the vessel between the two side handles. Herakles approaches from the right grasping one of the heads of the nine-headed, bearded Hydra with his left hand and raising his club with his right. Herakles is armored in a corslet and greaves. To his right, a large crab pinches Herakles' heel. Iolaos rushes forward from the left grasping one of the Hydra heads with his left hand and preparing to cut it off with the sickle he brandishes in his right. Underneath Iolaos is a small fire. On the reverse of the vessel, two sphinxes flank the vertical back handle, striding away from the center.

Etruscan, from Caere, Etruria, about 520-510 BCE. Attributed to the Eagle Painter (Greek, Caeretan, acitve 530-500 BCE).

So. Yep. I’ve just made a rather significant unsubstantiated claim in something I’ve just written & I’m pretty sure I’m on mark, but I need to do some digging (pardon the pun) to confirm 😑 #Etruscan #Archaeology
