The bluish-gray tones of its back and the warm orange of its breast stand out, harmonizing with the intense yellow of the bark lichens and the soft golden hues of the background. Two small songbirds (a nuthatch and a blue tit) sit on a bird feeder, topped with 5-8cm of snow. Behind them is a snow covered shrub, an neighbour's window is visible in the background, framed in white.

A red-backed shrike perched in the treetops stretches slightly to get a good view. It is summer and the sky is bright blue. The branch on which the bird is sitting is bare, but around it there is some green foliage on neighbouring branches.

The nuthatch clings artistically to a vertical hazelnut branch in late autumn and looks over its right shoulder with interest. Like the red-backed shrike in the other photo, it has a dark eye stripe. Both birds thus wear a mask, somewhat reminiscent of the cliché of a classic film gangster.
