Un art de vivre

Tone painting of a half-open rose blossom and surrounding leaves. Rose is tilted partly towards viewer, partly up and to the right corner of small 8x9 inch canvas.

Tone painting means a close study of light and shadow, so the whole image is shades of one color, in this case raw umber which is a dark grayish-brown, ranging from dark up to white.

The image is somewhat ghostly, because petals and leaves where saturated or strong color will be applied later are reserved in pure white.

Brushstrokes are clearly visible, a little thick and clumsy where trying to indicate edges of tightly-furled petals in center of flower that haven't yet opened.

Color added to previous painting, some details refined. The rose is now pale pink with hints of yellow, a darker mulberry-red in the shadows.

The flower is surrounded by vague shapes of dark green leaves with a few brighter green edges that seem to come forward in the light. The background is a textured brown with some light petal-like shapes indicating other flowers just outside the left and bottom edges of the picture.

The words "ENB After Fantin-Latour" have been written a bit awkwardly in dark reddish-brown paint matching the shadows on the rose in the lower right corner.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day9 #oilpainting study of one flower from an 1884 #FantinLaTour painting (ref image: www.christies.com/lot/lot-6435... ) I had to refine/adjust some shapes during glazing. This was my first flower apart from a simple Manet bouquet study to start the course.

My study of "Roses" by Fantin-Latour, original 1894. Floral arrangement of many large, fully-open, some starting to droop roses in a glass vase. They are light colors: pale pink, champagne, pale yellow, cream. Background is simple sienna brown with shadow under vase indicating surface like a table.

Ref image (note it's square, unlike my canvas):

My study of Sargent 1906 self-portrait, cropped to just his head. Bearded distinguished-looking man with raised white collar and dark jacket. He looks out at viewer with level, neutral gaze, possibly appraising. "ENB after sargent" written in awkward gray paint at lower right.

My study of Robert Henri's "Tam Gam" painted in 1914. Chinese girl of about 14 in traditional cross-collar blouse or robe, pale blue fastened with button below right shoulder. Her black hair is pinned up, attractively wispy/bushy with longer wisps falling around her ears outside small gold earrings with white drop pendants. She has a slightly shy, pleasant but reserved expression and faint smile.

Reproductions of this painting vary wildly in intensity; I chose the one in the museum housing it as my main model for color:

Day5 #ArtAdventCalendar I don't usually post work from my Learning From the Great Masters class, but I just finished a #FantinLaTour study. While I'm at it, here's my #Sargent, #Henri and #vanGogh #oilpainting studies. The goal is to analyze & learn technique, not simply copy. Work names in altText.
