A fan of sloping, eroded sediment leads upward toward a sculpted butte of shale and mudstone. Upon the alluvium sit a number of shards and larger pieces of petrified wood that has weathered out of the surrounding sediments. More mounds are visible along the horizon line at left. The sky is featureless.

In the badlands, every rainstorm brings the promise of #new material exposed. Which can be a boon to those with an interest in paleontology.

A fossilized tree stump stands at a tilt upon the fractured mudstone surface of a vast desert plain. Other smaller bits of fossil wood can be seen scattered about. Fair weather clouds are visible at the far horizon.
