Ill-Served: I did this one during a particularly harrowing week at work a while back (nothing like a little art therapy to the rescue😎 ). Two eyes and a nose emerged from the initial inkblot, and I added the asymmetrically-placed mouth, downturned into a frown to suit the mood that week. The sides of the face, created from the inkblot, appeared to be comprised of two female figures in profile in a pose vaguely reminiscent of playing volleyball. I added the sun-ball at the top.

I use this warmup for exploring new media—in this case, a couple of new inks—a different color palette, the interaction of a paint on a different paper, etc. Working into the inkblot is also a great way to exercise creativity. This one began with an inkblot that produced vaguely tree-like shapes, which I then developed into more obvious trees on a bank. The little creature was added after the blot, but in a non-deliberate, mark-making way that created a fun surprise. Ink study: Two bare-branched trees in neutral tones stand on opposite sides of the frame, almost connected on the ground by what appears to be a bank. A little creature sits in a contemplative pose beneath one of the trees.
