A sign having to do with queer ecology at the Garfield's Park Conservatory in Chicago.
Text:
People are like plants & plants are like people

For a long time, people have called queerness "unnatural" just because it doesn't fit into the usual "girl or boy" boxes that society expects. Did you know many plants don't follow boy or girl rules? Many flowers have both male and female parts in the same bloom. Not having our possessing both of the typical traits of male or female is defined as "intersex".

Querycology challenges the idea that nature is heterosexual, binary, or follow strict gender roles. It encourages us to think outside of this or that, but rather to think of all the beautiful instances between them.

Plants teach us that being different is natural and wonderful.

What is Queer Ecology?
Queer Ecology demonstrates that nature, animals, and people are full of different ways of living and growing, just like people are. It helps us understand that plants don't always fit into neat boxes. Some, like the papaya, can even change their sex depending on the weather and how much energy they have.

Flower of a bromeliad jutting out of its center. It's a burst of pink with tiny blue inflorescences amongst the sea of deep Greens.

Here's a type of orchid that is red yellow and orange when in bloom and the little purplish when still a bud.

At the #GarfieldParkConservatory and admiring their efforts to teach people about #queerecology and the inherent -and abundantly common- queerness in nature.

Rich green ferns grow below, while palms reach far above - toward a giant glass ceiling.

This is the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago a few weeks ago. This place is a rich treasure of interesting plants under giant glass roofs. It's free to visit for residents of Chicago.

Went to the #garfieldparkconservatory , pen and sketchbook in hand, to doodle some interesting plants! So far, the weird, furry intestine-like cactus was the most bizarre looking thing I spotted haha

I have no delusions about 2025, and we need to find tranquility when we can.
