After working more complicated patterns for a while, I decided to make a simple dish cloth. The colors are so pretty though, it’s now on track to be a baby blanket. #knitsky #garterstitch

day 1142: so I’ve circled back to the same pink from the start of this blanket, after thinking purple would be the last color.

I love changing my creative plans 💜🩷

this is a picture of a knitted project, which is in progress. Blue yarn is bunched up on the needle. It flows into a light green, and both are overlaid on the pink and yellow which are also in the in-progress blanket. The blanket is a garter stitch, with two medium weight strings of yarn used together. There are 100 stitches in each row. The needles are wooden and are 15mm in gauge.

Week 78 of #showmryourknits is #garterstitch! This storm is a good day to work up a project in it and binge watch something.
Here’s another of #westknits Purlbreak shawl I made.

My Samen shawl laid out on a wooden deck floor. The shawl is a very long, shallow asymmetrical triangle. The shorter half, farthest from the camera, consists of six thick garter stripes in three blended colors, a reddish tan, a pale blue flecked with brown, and a deep maroon. The stripes bend between the two (unequal) halves of the shawl, and on the closer, longer half, there is a wedge of stockinette lace with a simple eyelet grid in between each pair of garter stripes. Each of these regions is a different color combination made by remixing the fingering wool and mohair lace colors. From the center to the outermost chevron, the wedges are pale blue with chestnut flecks, deep chocolate brown, tan with chestnut flecks, tan with dark brown flecks, and pale blue with maroon flecks. I didn’t quite have enough aubergine wool and maroon mohair, so the outer chevron is a couple of rows thinner than the others, and the bind off is aubergine wool with chestnut mohair.

My Samen shawl next to my 20-pound cockapoo, for scale. Kiko is happy that I haven’t wrapped her up in the shawl—yet. Maybe after I block it.

The original pattern, by Stephen West, only has six color combinations, with the lace wedges alternating between three color blends. Back when I bought all the yarn, I had vague thoughts of mixing this up, and when I saw how low the contrast was between the aubergine and maroon garter stitch stripe and the aubergine and brown lace wedge, I was certain I wanted to remix the other wedges. As in the original pattern, each wedge uses the wool color from one adjacent garter stripe and the mohair from the other. Counting the thin edge of aubergine and chestnut at the bind off, the shawl has all nine color combinations of wool and mohair.

My Samen-dedicated haul of yarn from Stephen and Penelope, to which I made a pilgrimage while passing through Amsterdam. There are two skeins of each of the six colors. In the top row, Glowhair, a mohair-silk blend, in corduroy (the one I’ve been calling maroon), chestnut, and truffle. In the bottom row, Bicycle (100% merino wool), in aubergine, biscuit, and cirrus. The fabric from holding these together is SO plush, and knitting with them was a tactile delight.

My not-yet-blocked silly-huge Samen shawl, knit with yarn from Amsterdam. Three colors of wool fingering held together with three colors of mohair in giant #garterstitch chevrons with interspersed lace wedges.

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits is #GarterStitch.
I’m not a huge fan of garter stitch, but a comment from another user reminded me that Emotional Support Chickens count. I made a whole flock of them (and Junior ones) for Christmas presents. ESCs made from chunky yarn fit in pet carriers.

Really loving seeing all the fabulous #ShowMeYourKnits, as ever (is #GarterStitch week). 😍

I really haven’t got anything to show as am not a huge fan of garter stitch (for my *own garments*, is a me-thing 🤪); perhaps I’ll have something to show for next time though, if I find the right pattern 🤔🧶🫶🏻

Another addition to #garterstitch week at #showmeyourknits - two of Cat Bordhi’s (may she rest in peace) #fingerlessmitts - the Zen Garden (purple) and Mountain Gauntlets. I get hot hands but cold wrists and used to work in a cold office - these got/get lots of wear.

When I started knitting I felt like #garterstitch was low-key embarrassing—a bumpy, lumpy, stretchy mess I was only doing because I couldn’t do anything else. As is so often the case, time and experience proved me wrong.

Late to the #showmeyourknits #garterstitch party but I'm working on a really wild Weekender Sweater in rainbow yarn that features mostly garter. I was cautiously optimistic but am falling more and more in love with the color story!

Close up of my left hand holding a knitting project on a pointy metal needle. The fabric is alternating stripes of grey and red with a geometric mosaic motif along one edge. It is vastly satisfying and simple to knit. There is a brick fireplace in the background with colorful twinkly lights on it and a shelf with pictures and a plant on it, too.

Jasmine Long (at the time a student at the college where I teach) wearing a boxy garter stitch cardigan with bright mosaic color work on the lower body and sleeves. The pattern is called Seven Peaks. The main color is a light/medium blue, and the color work sections consist of seven strips of two-color decorative patterns in pairs of the main color, orange, yellow, and magenta. The colored bands on the body run from mid-chest to hem, and the coordinating thinner bands on the sleeves start a couple of inches below the elbows and extend to the cuffs. The textured button band has eight pearly white buttons, one in each two-color band and one just above them.

Another image of Jasmine Long in the Seven Peaks Cardigan. Here, she is buttoning the top button (or more likely miming that) to better show the designs on the sleeves. From the top to the bottom of the sweater, the colored bands on the body and the sleeves are blue and orange, orange and yellow, yellow and magenta, magenta and orange, orange and yellow, yellow and magenta, and magenta and blue. In each set of bands, each of the seven designs represents a different one of the seven possible frieze groups, which are the different types of symmetry that patterns that repeat in a single direction (horizontally here) can present.

Jasmine Long in a side view in the Seven Peaks Cardigan, smiling, with her left hand in her hair and her right arm hanging down. Both Jasmine and the photographer, Justin Forman, were very gracious with their time and their willingness to experiment with different poses and camera angles. This version of the cardigan was designed for a math fashion show, and so I kept it simple, but the version I made for myself has pockets! Working those in without disrupting the color patterns was a fun challenge. Assuming I ever manage to publish a pattern, I’ll definitely include the pocket option.
