Judith Slaying Holofernes, by Artemisia Gentileschi, is a dramatic Baroque painting that depicts a scene from the biblical book of Judith. The painting shows the Israelite heroine Judith, aided by her maidservant Abra, in the act of beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes with his own sword. Subject and Composition The painting captures the climactic and violent moment of the beheading. Judith and her maid are shown with their sleeves rolled up, actively struggling to overpower the larger man. Gentileschi's portrayal is known for its intense realism and gore, with blood spurting and staining the bed sheets and Judith's arms. The use of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, is prominent in the work, highlighting the figures and the violence of the scene against a dark background. Interpretation and Themes The painting has been widely interpreted as a powerful statement on female strength and empowerment. Early feminist critics viewed the work as a form of "visual revenge" following the artist's own sexual assault and the public trial that followed. Many art historians believe that Gentileschi used herself as a model for Judith and her attacker, Agostino Tassi, as Holofernes. The painting is a notable example of Gentileschi's determination to center strong women in her art, challenging traditional depictions of women as passive figures. Notes: During the 1612 trial of her rapist, Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi was called a whore and tortured in court to determine whether or not she was telling the truth. Even though she stood her ground, the court set the rapist free thanks to the Pope himself. She would eventually channel her rage into some of history's most violent paintings.

Oil painting. Baroque. Two women, one is Judith and the other is her maidservant. The one whobis standing has one hand raised in front of her, as if she is protecting her eyes from light. In the other hand she holds a small sword. The other is kneeling, looks as if she is washing clothes. Her head is covered in a white cloth.
This is Judith and Her Maidservant from 1625. She did like to focus on women, which could stem from her rape and torture. Art was maybe an outlet for her.
