Jointure Bay, Greenisland, looking towards Belfast; Belfast Hills in the background, houses of the Island Park promontory and Jointure Bay itself. Over the years, shoreside residents have blocked off ALL access points to the beach from the Shore Road, meaning that residents on the other side of the road have no access, without walking 1km in either direction along the road. We contend this is not safe, not accessible, illegal (blocked Public Right of Way) and discriminatory on the part of the Council. #ShareOurShore

Many of you will know we've been trying to get @meabc.bsky.social to restore our Public Right of Way access to the beach at #Greenisland. I submitted a #FreedomOfInformation request. the consultation responses were OVERWHELMINGLY in favour of access! Among our immediate neighbours, 77% say YES.

I didn't know this, but @paulajay.bsky.social tells me it's called "the hazels" (which is very appropriate!). It's owned by the Golf Club who are engaging v positively with some of our local councillors to improve access & experience. @aaron-skinner.bsky.social #Greenisland #ShareOurSlopes :-)

Beach glass from the secret beach in Greenisland - so secret, nobody even knows that Greenisland is named for an actual Green Island (Inishglass) that you can walk across to at low tide. Except the Council don't want to upset some of the neighbours by allowing you to do this. It's a complete disgrace, but you ARE welcome any time - please visit! Slipway on the @meabc.bsky.social Council owned beach at Greenisland that was built without permission for launching boats. However this slipway creates a significant pinch point at mid and high tide, preventing people from getting along the beach at a place where there are no safe access/egress points for the general public (without trespassing). The Council tolerate Loughside residents using the beach as their private playground, while refusing to restore public access that was removed progressively from the 1990s in breach of their statutory duties to preserve rights of way, and in violation of the Access to the Countryside Order 1983. See you in court!
While denying access to unwashed ratepayers of #Greenisland, Loughside residents can build huge pinch-point slipways without formal approval, and moor and launch their boats on the council-owned beach, contrary to the supposed findings of the H&S report. @belfasttelegraph.co.uk #OneLawForThem

Flooded boat on Greenisland beach. Technically the Council should remove this, as it is moored without permission. However, it'll likely be irreparably damaged soon if it isn't drained and refloated and taken on land for repairs...
Nice low tide tomorrow at around 09:30 - sounds like a little trespass is in order down to the #ForbiddenBeach at #Greenisland. Sure come on down - it'll be lovely! @meabc.bsky.social won't mind.
