Responding to the end of slavery (1793) in the #HaitianRevolution (1791), Congress passed a law on #ThisDayInHistory in 1803 to support Southern states that banned arrival of free Black people, and were seizing them from ships & selling them into slavery; about 20,000 were taken.

The #BattleOfVertières happened on #ThisDayInHistory in 1803. It was the last major battle of the #HaitianRevolution and a decisive victory for Dessalines, with most French troops killed. Napoléon had to accept the new republic of the former slaves but isolated it diplomatically.
