Sean Penn won the Oscar for portraying Harvey Milk in Milk, which also won Best Original Screenplay. The film brought the story of the first openly gay elected official in California to a worldwide audience.

Today in #LaborHistory 1/15/1976: Sara Jane Moore got life in #prison for attempted assassination of #POTUS Gerald Ford in #SanFrancisco. Oliver Sipple, #LGBTQ marine vet, stopped her. #HarveyMilk outed him to #media. Family disowned him. Sipple sued media, but lost. Died of alcoholism at age 47.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1978, former #SanFrancisco Supervisor #DanWhite assassinated Mayor #GeorgeMoscone and fellow Supervisor #HarveyMilk. White was convicted only of 'voluntary manslaughter', serving just five years, because eating junk food supposedly showed he was depressed.
