❓When
We suggest there are 3 main scenarios, which we illustrate using recent #headstarting projects:
⌛buy time for conservation measures to take effect
📈accelerate the recovery of very small populations
🪶assist with the colonization of new or improved habitat

📣 New paper out now in @conbiology.bsky.social!
#Headstarting - hatching eggs and/or rearing chicks in captivity & releasing them back to the wild - has been increasingly used for #wader #conservation. But it can be challenging and expensive.
So why do it and when❓

The Curlew Action team recently visited @breedingwaderseip.bsky.social in Ireland to see the #Curlew conservation work being undertaken there - including #headstarting - and to learn about the challenges being faced.
Mary Colwell writes up a summary of the trip for our blog:
It's a year of #headstarting for #BalticDunlins! First chicks are hatching and many more are on the way. We're trying to recover the almost extinct population breeding in coastal meadows around the #BothnianBay. Pics by Gerrit Wehrenberg

What is #Headstarting?
Headstarting is a crisis conservation technique for endangered species in which eggs are removed from areas in which they are unlikely to survive, reared in captivity and the young birds fledged back to the wild.
