Copulation can take several hours, with the female supporting the male’s weight and swimming to the surface for air. She’ll mate with multiple males over a two-week period and store their sperm for several months to fertilize multiple egg clutches. To me, the turtles’ expressions make this photo special—even if I’m unsure of how to interpret them.

My Kenyan sand boa has emerged from the substrate after months of burrowing and refusing to eat! I found him making this silly pose with his head resting on a wall rock.
