Poet's ledge a side quests just 0.5 mile off the #LongPath. An amazing view upstream of an ancient glacial ravine.

Pink Lady’s Slipper in Bluestone #Forest. They’re not especially rare, but the blooming window is short—and this one isn’t in full bloom yet.

Quarry walls in the abandoned Bluestone Forest #quarry, #Catskills. Now heavily overgrown, but likely striking in winter with bare trees and hanging icicles.

Exploring more of Bluestone Forest in the #Catskills once a sprawling bluestone #quarry, now mostly overgrown except for the cleared final floor. The quarry extends beyond the park, making the complex even larger.

Sheraton Crossroad hotel is no more. For more than 20 years I have been passing this building on my way to and from many of my hiking outings.

Personally, the Charging Bull isn’t really my thing—but it was on the way, so we paid our respects. If you want to see it without a crowd, show up at 7 AM on a Sunday.

The end. After nine hours and just under 22 miles, we made it to the southern tip of #Manhattan around 6:30 PM. Grabbed some food and watched the Brooklyn skyline in the #sunset glow.

Past Union Square, we returned to Broadway—a straight shot through Greenwich Village, SoHo, Tribeca, and the Financial District. Eclectic and crowded but some of the best #skyscraper are here

From Hell’s Kitchen, we dashed straight across town and picked Madison Avenue for our final stretch south. Along the way the Chrysler Building—my favorite NYC skyscraper, sorry I am not original here

We headed south through the Upper West Side and Hell’s Kitchen, avoiding crowds on quieter West End Av. Many buildings here are tall pre-WWI apartments that replaced old row houses and French flats

On the way to the West Side we swung by the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Still unfinished, still beautiful.

Here we go: #Inwood Hill Park at the northern tip of Manhattan looks almost like a real forest albeit with paved trails.

#Hiking the length of Manhattan. We did it! Starting from the Northern tip with the view of the Hudson River to the Southern tip and the statue of Liberty. 21.65 miles.

We finally reached Verkeerder Kill #waterfalls in #Minnewaska State Park. I hiked here many times but for the crew this was their first. Time to plan our next hike.

Hiked the #longpath from Sam’s Point to Verkeerderkill Falls with a small crew. Easy trail through blueberry fields and cliffs, but the cold wind, blood sacrifices (again), and a failed #creek crossing kept things interesting.

The confluence of the three streams and the waterfalls marked the lowest point of the loop. From there, it was all uphill to the ridge above the next Peters Kill valley. This is the way!

On the ground, it was more confusing than the map suggested. The #waterfall was further up, where three streams meet. A fast-moving, three-part cascade tumbles down a steeper slope.

Fifty shades of #green down Sanders Kill. The #forest here is old- #moss -covered trunks, lichen-streaked boulders, and tangled roots tracing the damp ground.

Saturday’s #hike: bushwhacking along Sanders Kill in search of an unnamed, often unmarked waterfall in a quiet, trail-less corner of #Minnewaska State Park.

On Friday we hiked a mellow 5-mile loop around the lake in Sterling Forest State Park. This #forest just can’t catch a break—last year’s Jennings Creek fire scorched about 30% of it, and some massive blowdown took out the pine grove near the old iron mines.

The fire was stopped near the summit of Bangle Hill. The summit plateau is intact with small pretty ledges covered in floppy Umbilicaria.

The first mile up to Bangle Hill follows the edge of the Whitehouse brush fire of 2024. It looks like the fire was stopped at the Long Path. The right side of the trail is burned, with a sharp, stark boundary
