どこにでも当たり前にいるカエル。庭に出たら、必ず見かけると言っても良いくらい。私にとっては子どもの頃から、いて当然の存在でしたが、北海道で暮らし始めてからは、とんと見かけません。いないわけじゃないらしいけれど、まるっきりと言って良いくらい、遭遇しない。実家に帰ると、カエルいっぱいいて、なんだかちょっと安心する。

あまりにも身近で、夏場は庭に出てアマガエルを見ない日はないというくらい、いて当然の存在でした。今も見かけるけれど、子どもの頃と比べると、ずいぶんと数が減ってしまったような気がします。７月くらいだと、まだまだ痩せっぽちで骨の目立つ小さなカエルが多いですね。秋が近くなると、大きくて丸みを帯びたカエルが多くなる気がします。エサを上手にとれないコは淘汰されちゃうんだろうな。

The #treefrogs this year were very cooperative models. These are mostly the Squirrel Treefrog, #Hyla squirella. Their eyes are so cool.
