Mýrdalsjökull, Icelandic for "(the) mire dale glacier" or "(the) mire valley glacier") is an ice cap on the top of the Katla Volcano in the south of Iceland. It is to the north of the town of Vík í Mýrdal and to the east of the smaller ice cap Eyjafjallajökull. Between these two glaciers is the Fimmvörðuháls pass. The glacier contributes to the most serious natural hazard area of Iceland.

A string of green, moss-covered mountains runs from the middle of the image to the rear right. In the right foreground is a small, completely still lake and to the left is a braided river that flows around the back side of the mountains. The sunset sky is a combination of muted lavender and pink.

A braided river makes its way through a black sandur on the south coast of Iceland. There are steep cliffs to the left and a small amount of yellow/green vegetation between the cliffs and the river.

Giving you a break from the waterfalls for a minute with a shot from the south coast of Iceland. Well, technically there’s a waterfall in the background - tough to avoid them in there.

A waterfall at the right of the image spills into a deep, moss-covered canyon where a river flows down the center. The mountains in the back fade into the clouds.

In preparing some images for printing, I did a re-edit of this older shot. To help with scale, the waterfall at the right is ~400 ft tall, although only half of it is visible.
