This pastel on paper work depicts two women digging up potatoes, one stooping to gather the crop while the other leans on her spade; the work is done in warm brown and green earth tones, with the setting sun bursting through the work with its intense orange, slightly obscured by smoke drifting across the horizon.
On this November afternoon, we are taking a moment to reflect on Potato Diggers in the West, a highly atmospheric work by Charles MacIver Grierson that beautifully captures the late autumn light and intensity of the setting sun.
