A broad-tailed hummingbird in flight approaches a Red Valerian bloom for nectar on a sunny day. The wings of the hummingbird are outstretched behind the bird's body, at the apex of the upstroke of its wings. Since the bird is either a female or a juvenile, its colors are more muted than an adult male's. Even so, its head has tiny iridescent green feathers above the eye, similar to an eyebrow. Its gorget is speckled with dark green and white feathers, and two fuchsia pink feathers. Its belly is primarily a buffy cream color. Where the body joins the wing, the feathers are a peach-brown color. Its shoulders and tail are also peppered with iridescent green feathers. The wingtips show slight motion blur, even though the image was shot with 1/3200ths of a second shutter speed.
