An Abert's Squirrel is shown leaping mid-air from the forest floor towards a Ponderosa Pine tree trunk. The forest floor is covered with colorful fallen leaves and yellow, green and red vegetation of various types. The black squirrel's ears are tufted with fur. The dark color of its fur is thought to help keep it warm during winter. Other squirrels of the same species have lighter fur in warmer environments.

The #Abert’s #squirrel, a tassel-eared dweller of Ponderosa #Pine #forests, is a key indicator of #forest health and helps spread vital #mycorrhizal #fungi.
