The reality: I have federal #IndianStatus, but I’ve never qualified for funding #Kahnawake receives. The community decides who benefits, and their membership rules don’t even follow traditional #matrilineal protocols so federal recognition, community benefits, and traditional law all don’t line up.
Funny paradox: I have federal #IndianStatus, so I qualify for government “benefits,” but #Kahnawake itself doesn’t recognize me as a member. Federal law gives me some access only to Federal benefits, but the community decides my #cultural and #political belonging and the two don’t always line up.

"Kanien'kehá:ka Woman from Kahnawà:ke" is by Dutch Canadian artist Cornelius David Krieghoff. It depicts an unidentified member of the Kanien'kehá:ka Nation, also known as the Mohawk, who resides in the community of Kahnawà:ke, near Montreal, Canada. Kahnawà:ke is a Kanien'kehá:ka community within the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. Standing alone on a sandy path, a dark haired woman is dressed in a long, reddish-brown shawl with a lighter trim, draped over a reddish dress. Most striking is a black top hat she is wearing, a stark contrast to her “traditional” attire. She cocks her head from the path to make eye contact with us as she carries a substantial load of small, neatly stacked, woven baskets. These baskets are predominantly off-white and cream-colored with blue and red geometric patterns. They appear to be intricately crafted and numerous, almost completely obscuring her lower body. The baskets are piled around her as if they’re extremely heavy. The background is a serene, slightly melancholic landscape. The path leads to a gentle rise in the terrain covered with sparse, low-lying vegetation. There's a body of water, perhaps a river, visible in the distance, and a faint glimpse of hills beyond. The sky is a soft, pale blue-gray evening or dawn sky, giving a peaceful yet somewhat somber atmosphere. The overall lighting is soft and diffused, casting few harsh shadows. A small hollow tree stump sits near the bottom left of the painting adding to the rustic feel. Krieghoff was a Dutch-born Canadian-American painter of the 19th century. He is best known for his paintings of Canadian genre scenes involving landscapes and outdoor life, which were as sought after in his own time as they are today. He painted many winter scenes, some in several variants (e.g. Running the Toll). He painted in Quebec City from 1853 to 1864 and 1870 to 1872, creating a prolific portfolio of landscape and genre paintings.
