Update #4. Disposing of removed sod has been a slow go. Otherwise, warmer weather has worked wonders.
I did go ahead and shade 3 evergreen huckleberries and 1 tall Oregon grape against mid-afternoon sun. Perked them right up.

Here's a peek at our first Seattle house in 1975, when we bought it, and 2001, when we sold it. Hubby and I have been replacing lawn with plants more friendly to the planet for coming up on 50 years. (Got into natives in 1991.) It's hard work, but rewarding!
