AI Liquid Biopsy Detects Early Liver Fibrosis and Cirrhosis Before Symptoms Researchers at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have developed an AI-driven blood test capable of detecting early liver fibrosis and cirrhosis years before symptoms appear. The technology, called fragmentome analysis, examines genome-wide patterns of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) fragments circulating in the blood. Unlike traditional liquid biopsies that look for specific mutations, this method analyzes how DNA fragments are broken and distributed, capturing hidden signals of overall health. Using whole-genome sequencing of cfDNA from over 1,500 individuals with liver conditions and other medical issues, the AI system identifies fragmentation patterns linked to disease. This approach showed high sensitivity for early liver disease detection, offering the potential to intervene before fibrosis progresses to cirrhosis or increases the risk of liver cancer. The researchers also created a fragmentome-based comorbidity index, which predicted overall survival and could be applied to other chronic diseases. While the liver fibrosis test remains a prototype, this method may eventually extend to cardiovascular, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative conditions, opening new possibilities for early diagnosis and preventive care.
