Autumn Hippie Gathering in Moscow, "Under the Pine Tree" near the Grand Palace in Tsaritsyno Park. There are several opinions about the origins of the tradition of gathering in the park "under the pine tree." The version that seems most plausible goes like this: in the early 1970s, peaceful Soviet hippies, allegedly with some provocation from law enforcement, held a rally on Children's Day to protest the Vietnam War. The rally was dispersed, many participants lost their jobs or were expelled from educational institutions, and some (according to rumors) were even imprisoned. The following year, those who remained free gathered in a clearing near the ruins of the palace, on the wild outskirts of what was then Moscow. This tradition continued every year until 2023, when the hippies were pushed out of their usual spot (which had long since become a modern park) to distant areas on the outskirts of Moscow. But even after more than 40 years, people still gather twice a year: on June 1st and September 1st. Both hippies and any nonconformists who share the hippie ideals of freedom, love, and peace come together.
