On the #PHG blog; we're in #Luzon, checking out this proud memorial to #USSStingray #SS-186. Small-scale sealifts such as the one that took place near here delivered vital support to the Filipino resistance. #Philippines #PacificHistoryGuide #NavalHistory

The Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove (so called because its red breast feathers look like it has been stabbed in the heart). It is extant to the Philippines but is primarily found on the island of Luzon (but also Polippo and Catanduanes -extremely rare in the latter); the favoured habitat includes primary and secondary forest. Much of the population is fragmented due to deforested and cultivated land. It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List with a decreasing population trend. Other negative effects include mining, hunting and trapping and road kill. It can be found from 0-1400 metres above sea level. This species feeds on berries, seeds and invertebrates on the ground. It usually occurs singly or in pairs. There are three subspecies.
This Luzon heart dove individual was particularly tame and took a fondness for me (I did not feed it). Perhaps it had be hand reared. Details of this species are in the ALT text of the first photo.

@alan678.bsky.social #BirdOfTheDay #NoBranch #Luzon #BleedingHeart #Dove on the left #hand. This #bird was in a very spacious #aviary and became very fond of me (I did not feed it). It migrated from perching on my camera lens to my hand. This is an old archive #photo. #photography #birds 🪶

#Nokaen/#Ada continues to struggle well east of #Luzon, #Philippines. Nokaen will dissipate as it drifts eastward over the next couple of days.
709,000 years ago on Luzon, but not modern humans: artifacts point to earlier hominins. How do scientists piece together island migrations from bone and stone? #Archaeology #Hominins #Kalinga #Luzon #Philippines
