Four astronauts are now inexorably bound for the Moon The Orion spacecraft successfully fired its main engine for 5 minutes and 50 seconds on Thursday, sending four astronauts on a free-return trajectory around the Moon. For NASA and the Artemis II crew members, this marked a point of no return for more than week. Most Americans, indeed about three-quarters of the population around the world, have not witnessed humans leaving low-Earth orbit in their lifetimes. The last time this occurred was 1972, with the final Apollo Moon mission. The “translunar injection” burn of Orion’s main engine occurred about one day after the successful launch of the mission on NASA’s Space Launch System rocket from Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday. This burn was the last major firing of Orion’s main engine, and sets the crew on a course to fly around the Moon on Monday, slingshot back toward Earth under lunar gravity, and splash down in the Pacific Ocean on Friday, April 10. “Things are going really well right now,” said Lori Glaze, NASA’s senior official over exploration, during a news conference on Thursday evening. “I don’t think we could be more pleased.” First day is filled with activity The decision to leave Earth orbit followed a busy day on...

Chemical Signature Hidden in Lunar Rocks Hints at Oxygen in The Ancient Moon The Earth and the Moon may look very different today, but they formed under similar conditions in space. In fact, a dominant hypothesis says that the early Earth was hit by a Mars-sized object, and it was this giant impact that spun off material to form the Moon. But unlike Earth, the Moon lacks plate tectonics and an atmosphere capable of reshaping its surface and recycling elements such as oxygen over billions of years. As a result, the Moon preserves a record of the geological conditions that helped shape it and can give scientists insight into the world we live in today. Rocks that were formed during early volcanic activity on the Moon offer a window into events that occurred nearly 4 billion years ago. By uncovering the conditions under which the Moon's rocks formed, scientists move closer to understanding the origins of our own planet. In a study published March 2026 in the journal Nature Communications, our team of physicists and geoscientists investigated ilmenite, a mineral composed of iron, titanium and oxygen, in a Moon rock crystallized from an ancient lunar magma. We used cutting-edge electron microscopy to probe the chemical signature of titanium in this ilmenite, finding that...

Artemis 2 heads to the moon WASHINGTON — NASA’s Artemis 2 mission is on its way to the moon after a successful maneuver April 2. The Orion spacecraft Integrity fired its main engine at 7:49 p.m. Eastern for five minutes and 50 seconds. The translunar injection, or TLI, burn, which took place as Orion reached the 185-kilometer perigee in its elliptical orbit around Earth, placed the spacecraft on a free-return trajectory around the moon. “With that successful TLI, the crew is feeling pretty good up here on our way to the moon,” Jeremy Hansen, one of the four astronauts on Artemis 2, told controllers shortly after the burn. At a briefing after the burn, NASA officials said the TLI burn had gone as planned. “For the first time since 1972 on Apollo 17, human beings have left Earth orbit,” said Lori Glaze, NASA acting associate administrator for exploration systems development. The burn was “flawless,” she said, and is the last major maneuver by the spacecraft. “From this point forward, the laws of orbital mechanics are going to carry our crew to the moon, around the far side, and back to Earth.” With the burn by the main engine on the spacecraft’s service module, Orion is now...

Would you agree that the Earth appears to be egg-shaped? It does not look like a perfectly round sphere. But the egg shape is actually the perfect shape, not the sphere.

Artemis II lifts off, carrying humans back toward the moon The Artemis II mission rocket lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday evening, carrying four astronauts on a historic mission to the moon. Tens of thousands of people hugged on Cocoa Beach Pier and its surrounding sand as the 32-story rocket shot above into the blue sky on its journey toward the moon for the first time since 1972. Crowds also jammed the surrounding roads and beaches, reminiscent of the Apollo moonshots in the 1960s and ’70s. What is the goal for Artemis II? The astronauts, three Americans and a Canadian, are set to test the Orion spacecraft or the exploration vehicle that carries astronauts to the moon and back. The astronauts aboard Artemis II were also launched into space by NASA's new and most powerful rocket yet, the Space Launch System rocket. Artemis II is the second mission in NASA's Artemis program of moon exploration, with Artemis I having sent an uncrewed Orion to lunar orbit and back in 2022. Under Artemis, NASA hopes to send astronauts on increasingly difficult missions to explore the moon for scientific discovery and to build on that foundation for the first crewed mission to Mars. The agency hopes for...

Eight-year-old space lover's plushie shoots for moon onboard Nasa rocket A zero-gravity indicator designed by a San Francisco Bay Area second-grader is aboard Artemis II, Nasa’s first crewed lunar mission in over 50 years. As the rocket entered space following Wednesday’s launch, the smiley-faced plush toy was designed to float under the zero-gravity conditions, indicating to the astronauts they have achieved weightlessness. Eight-year-old Lucas Ye, from Mountain View, is an avid space enthusiast and the mastermind behind the indicator. “I like rockets, I like Nasa, I like the solar system, I like studying about space,” Lucas said in a video when he made the shortlist for the global “moon mascot” competition, presided over by Nasa and Freelancer, a crowdsourcing company. Lucas won over 2,600 other entrants. Trisha Epp, director of innovation at Freelancer, congratulated Lucas in a news release last week: “Your design is literally going to space, which is not a sentence most people get to say.” Lucas’s plush toy sports a baseball cap with a star-spangled visor and a crown resembling Earth’s green- and blue-hued surface. Parts of the design pay homage to the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, Lucas said in his video. Its name Rise is also a reference to the Earthrise photograph, captured by...

Successful Space Launch Sets the Stage for Moon Nuclear One country whose economy has been relatively resilient to the crisis, however, is China. That’s despite the fact that China is the world’s second-largest consumer of oil (and its largest importer) and its third-largest consumer of gas (and largest consumer of liquified natural gas). But it has not seen the same type of immediate crisis that other Asian energy importers have. It may be the No. 1 customer of oil coming through the Strait of Hormuz (and especially Iranian oil, which is still flowing), but its main policy adjustment the government has made since the United States and Israeli attack has been to limit exports of refined products. It also came into the crisis with stockpiles of oil estimated at 1.4 billion barrels, more than three times the amount of oil the International Energy Agency coordinated the release of. In the short run, many Asian countries, especially poorer ones, are embracing energy use restrictions, including limitations on driving and raising temperatures in government buildings, while some richer countries are able to increase supply by rebooting nuclear plants and upping capacity limitations on coal-fired power plants. In the longer run, several countries are making investments in energy sources that are less...

Artemis 2 astronauts head for the moon after make-or-break engine burn (video) Artemis 2 is on its way to the moon. The mission's Orion capsule aced a crucial translunar injection (TLI) burn this evening (April 2), firing its main engine to leave Earth orbit and head toward our planet's natural satellite. It was a huge milestone for the Artemis 2 mission, and one of its crewmembers marked it with some poignant words. "With that successful TLI, the crew is feeling pretty good up here on our way to the moon, and we just wanted to communicate to everyone around the planet who's worked to make Artemis possible that we firmly felt the power of your perseverance during every second of that burn," Artemis 2 astronaut Jeremy Hansen, of the Canadian Space Agency, said just after the maneuver. "Humanity has once again shown what we are capable of, and it's your hopes for the future that carry us now on this journey around the moon," he added. Artemis 2 launched Wednesday evening (April 1) from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sending four astronauts aloft on the first-ever crewed flight of Orion and its Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The duo had flown together just once before, on the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission...

Daily briefing: NASA's Artemis II Moon mission launches If all goes to plan, later today NASA will launch four people on a journey around the Moon. Some of the key experiments that will be conducted during the mission will explore how deep-space travel affects human health. For example, researchers will place cells from each Artemis II astronaut onto an ‘organ on a chip’ to test their reaction to deep-space radiation during the flight. Other research will rely on the astronauts’ ability to spot geological features on parts of the Moon that have never been seen first-hand before. (Apollo astronauts travelled much closer to the surface, limiting their view.) “The amazing part of having crews is they have brains and eyes, and the capacity for thought and reaction,” says planetary scientist Barbara Cohen. Nature | 9 min read What do you want to know about the Artemis mission? Tell us using this form, and we’ll aim to answer top questions in our coverage. Why some feel Artemis ambivalence “On the science side, this is one of the first steps in a very long-term plan to get a human base on the Moon,” says Catherine Heymans, the Astronomer Royal for Scotland. As such, some scientists aren’t that excited about what’s...

Artemis II officially leaves Earth's orbit on the way to the moon NASA's Artemis II mission successfully lifted off from Florida's Space Coast Wednesday (April 1) around 6:35 p.m. EDT. But today (Thursday) marked the mission's next crucial step: the translunar injection burn, the long push that sends the spacecraft out of Earth's orbit and into deep space, where it will rendezvous with the moon about four days from now. "[The burn] propels Orion on a path toward the moon and sets it on the free-return trajectory that will ultimately bring [the] crew back to Earth for splashdown," NASA officials wrote in the Artemis II press kit. "Though only two days into the mission, it essentially doubles as Orion's deorbit burn as well." The translunar injection burn is the last turning point for any moon mission. Because the astronauts are still in Earth's orbit, they have an easier chance to return home if the mission management team deems the mission unfit to proceed. After the spacecraft leaves Earth's gravity, there's no way back but to swing around the moon as planned. Thankfully, NASA's mission management team found no issues and gave the green light for the burn. Scheduled for 7:49 p.m. EDT, the burn lasted 5 minutes and 50 seconds. According to...
