After #DeanStreetDecember 2025, an update on the state of my @deanstpress.bsky.social library. It's in 3 tags: dsp-read, dsptbr, and dsp-dnf. On the left, dsp-read. On the right, dsptbr (atm) I did not screenshot dsp-dnf, because there are only five. 😁

a passage of text on a Kobo Sage e-reader, from "Four Gardens" by Margery Sharp. Text as follows:

Within so complicated a system the inhabitants of Morton had naturally to tread with care; but so practiced were their steps, so keen their social noses, that no gaffe of any magnitude had occurred since 1879. In that disorderly year, indeed, there had been two: the seduction of a Major’s daughter by a chemist, and the engagement of a grocer’s daughter to a gentleman’s son.

VERY early into "Four Gardens" my 4th @deanstpress.bsky.social for #DeanStreetDecember this passage suggesting I'm REALLY going to like it. Me being me, the title of the book automatically made me think of the place on the right. 😀 #Reading #middlebrow #Booksky

Saturday listening. When I saw this in a thrift I immediately placed that my Dad had this in his collection when I was a kid.

I was wondering how the sound would be with all 45mins of the Fifth on one side, but it’s quite acceptable! And some notes taboot.

I know Sue Kennedy is on bsky somewhere, and hope she's still happy with such a stunning cover for a very good book. #middlebrow #women #scholarship 💙📚

stats @thestorygraph.com say I've read only 2 @deanstpress.bsky.social books this yr. Ouch! Nr 3 is showing why Margery Sharp may be my favourite DSP #middlebrow "he ... began seriously to examine the Laws governing Male Incidence at Female Tea-fights"😀 My DSP-TBR down to 44 now. FOR now😱 #booksky

Pleased to have found The Middlebrow Network @middlebrownetwork.bsky.social on this here butterfly site -- which reminds me that I have a ton of manuscript images from my visit to Dorothy Whipple's archive that still need going through and transcribing.

Kobo Sage ereader with the following text highlighted:

She did not stop to enquire why her fiancé had not let her know of his return, it was enough that he was there, at hand, obviously willing and competent to take all responsibility from her shoulders. It was an attitude which Mr. Partridge highly approved: he liked women to be feminine, and it pleased him to discover that Miss Campion’s true character, now revealed, was that of a clinging vine.

Intent is everything: Reading "Harlequin House" for #DeanStreetDecember24 I came across the attached passage. I've read the very same sentiment expressed IN EARNEST, in other #middlebrow books and raged at it. Because I know Ms Sharp definitely did NOT mean it, I laughed at this

The fact that I very literally laughed out loud at the opening SENTENCE of "Harlequin House", my 15th and final book for #DeanStreetDecember24 , fills me with hope & dread:

Hope that the book stays this funny, dread that it might not.

TFW you think "huh?!" then remember the author lived in the bottom Hemisphere, with wrong-way-round winds
"I was quite relieved when one night the wind swung round to the south and blew a milder blast, melting the snow"

Many posts about @deanstpress.bsky.social great collection of #middlebrow books so here's 83 (iow, A FEW) of their #mystery books. This is my set, with some especially interesting female authors highlighted. And yes, I know I risk the wrath of @puzzledoctor.bsky.social for having so few Flynns😂

Yep, the stats @thestorygraph.com help in being able to see which genres and authors work for me, and which not so much. That #middlebrow is averaging over 4/5 for nearly 30 books shows it resonates well. Just a shame that Stevenson's Tall Stranger, a favourite, was one I couldn't buy from DSP
