A low shot of a carpet of leafy plants growing from brown leaf litter. The plants each have a single leaf, thick and straight-veined, which are in various stages of uncurling from thin tubes to wide, heart-shaped leaves.

Maianthemum dilatatum grows in beautiful carpets across the forest floor in our region, and they've finally started cropping up this spring.

Despite their towering height and tree-like appearance, palm trees are actually more closely related to grasses, lilies, and bamboo than to traditional trees. They belong to the monocot group of plants, which means they have no rings, no true bark, and no real branches. Instead, their trunks are more like giant, reinforced stems.
