DOMUS SOLARATA, C9 CE. FORUM OF NERVA

Here we see, at dusk, the still-impressive portico of a high-medieval house built into the ruins of the Forum of Nerva using stone, including the tufo from the Forum Romanum-facing end of Nerva's Forum. There are bits and pieces of marble, and the vestigial upper floor seems to have been made with marble chips and mortar. This was an aristocratic house, with a curtis or court toward the Forum Romanum and a hortus or garden on its other side. The portico followed the edge of the important street called the Argiletum, which crossed the Forum of Nerva. The pavement of marble had been removed a century or so previously to be burnt into lime, so the new pavement was cobbled together from other stone fragments and even horse bones.

96 AD — Emperor Domitian is assassinated, ending the Flavian dynasty.

VAULTED STUCCO CEILING, C. 90-100 CE. DOMUS OF SAN CLEMENTE

We are in a wealthy domus of the late Flavian or early Antonine era which was built on the site of a house destroyed in the Great Fire of 64 CE after this land was returned to private use following its incorporation in the grounds of the Domus Aurea. Only part of the domus has been excavated, including a summer triclinium, semi-buried and decorated with coral to simulate a cave, which was transformed along with the rest of the house into a Mithraic cult centre in the C3. This room, directly in front of the triclinium/Mithraic banqueting hall, still has its delicate C1 stucco ceiling, once richly painted. It is a series of framed squares around a rectangle, at back, with a stucco bird or flower in each square. The rectangle seems to have a candelabrum at its centre. Further toward us, a large square is framed with hexagons, each with a flower at the centre. This must have been a magnificent ceiling in its time.

CAMEO OF DOMITIAN, C. 85 CE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI FIRENZE

This two-level sardonyx cameo has a portrait of Domitian in profile facing right, all carved from the upper white layer, while the background is a brown layer. The emperor is shown with the obligatory laurel crown and is wearing the ægis of Minerva, his tutelary goddess, even including an entirely non-monstrous Gorgoneion, which is just a woman's smiling face. He is carrying a sceptre which cuts across the background in front of his nose. The sceptre has a little carved eagle atop an orb at the end of it. Due to some mild striations on the emperor's neck, Domitian seems to have a worrying blue-ish tumour on his neck. Have that seen to! Unlike last week's cameo, this one survived Domitian's damnatio memoriae without being given Nerva's nose.

#ReliefWednesday offers us a comparison to last week's #cameo of #Domitian with one from the grand-ducal collection of the #Medici in #Florence. This is a less fancy piece of gem cutting, and less skilled, but at least it didn't get the nose of #Nerva cut into it. #ClassicsBluesky 🏺

CAMEO WITH IMPERIAL HEAD, 80-100 CE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI

Temporarily at the Capitoline Museums for the Farnese exhibition.

This beautiful bust of an emperor is in three-level sardonyx, the top level being a caramel-coloured brown over a middle layer of white and a bottom layer of iridescent grey. The emperor is facing towards the right, and his laurel crown and part of the chlamys on his shoulder are both in the top level brown colour, whereas the majority of the head and shoulders are in the white layer. This cameo was acquired by Fulvio Orsini, the agent and collector for Cardinal Alessandro II Farnese. There are two curious things about this piece. First, it has the shape of the head of Domitian, but the beaky nose of his successor Nerva. Second, it shows no signs of being recarved to look like Nerva (no narrowing of the head, for instance), leading some scholars to suspect it is a C16 fake. But I think it was recarved well in antiquity. Really the only part to be reworked was Nerva's nose: the round chin looks like Domitian's, as does the brow.

The Mystery of Nerva's Nose is on our minds for #ReliefWednesday. From the back of this #cameo's head, with its little curls at the nape of its neck, all the way to the profile, this #emperor is clearly #Domitian. But then wham, that beak! It surely belongs to #Nerva. So...? #ClassicsBluesky 🏺
